I had a trusted shop change my transmission fluid and coolant. They said my front pads were almost gone at 75K and suggested a front brake job for $600.00. I chose to watch a youtube video and get amazon Bosch pads for $35.00 amd 2 hours later I was done. I enjoy working on vehicles unless it is June,July or August. Oil changes are easy, done in 15 minutes.

My butler takes care of the routine car maintenance and I can’t be troubled to ask.

You rotate without balancing the tires?

I do all the work on my motorcycle and truck but not on my wife's car. If she thinks she hears or feels anything different after the task, I'll be under that thing for a week attempting to rectify the issue.

I'm been working on vehicles since I was a teenager, but my time is more valuable to me now. My truck is 5 yrs old and about to hit 100k, I take it in every 10k for oil change and tire rotation. Get things like brakes, air filters, etc. when needed. I usually do it on a Friday and work on my laptop while it is being worked on. That way it doesn't interfere with my downtime.

Don’t have a comment either way just wanted to say the price of windshield wiper blades are nuts at auto parts stores. $30 for one blade? Crazy. Thank goodness for Costco. And what the hell happened to the blade refills that cost like $2?

If you have an O'Reilly's nearby, you should check and see if they have the specialized tools you need. Now for the surprise: they'll let you borrow them, no charge, just excellent customer relations

Yep. Had to replace condenser on my truck’s AC. The only thing I didn’t have was the vacuum pump. Went to O’Reilly’s right by the house and paid the deposit, vacuumed the system, and got my money back when I returned it.

I've changed brakes once and I somehow fricked up the caliper and it made noise forever. So frick that.
And I have a skid plate. No fricking way I'm laying on a creeper to frick with that shite every time I need an oil change. I changed a lot of oil when I was young and poor. I'm not poor anymore. So frick that too.

I'm not poor. My shop has a lift, a big screen, and a 1200 watt Yamaha. I've been working on my cars since I worked in a shop as a teen.

I do my own brakes, consider that basic maintenance for a car. Also oil changes, plugs, AC, exhaust, etc. I keep the cars clean with coatings that protect the paint/clear.

As a result of my efforts, my high school car is in my possession and in working order.

Do your own brakes, nothing to it.

I would gladly change my own oil if I had a nice jack and something to keep my truck up to work underneath it. Used to change the oil all the time. Now brakes, I'll let my buddy who does automobile work change em for half the price others charge.

It depends on the vehicle for me. My old Jeep, there was plenty of ground clearance to slide under for an oil change. 15-20 minutes tops to drain, put on a new filter, and refill. A minivan or SUV, no chance without ramps, so I just take them in every 5k miles. The Jeep was also easy to work on the brakes. A set of pads is relatively cheap, and I could knock those out in an hour.

I did it a couple of times on our van, but sometimes it is just easier to take it to the shop and come back in an hour or so. The place I take mine to will give you discounts for stacking services. If I'm already doing a rotate and balance, they just charge me for parts on the brake pads.

Unless I am too broke to pay someone or the car is stuck somewhere, I don’t do any repairs or maintenance.

Last two things I did was change my truck battery and replace the alternator in wife’s car (it died in her parents driveway).

I put a new engine in my son's car a few years ago. Never would have done it for myself. I did it just to prove that I can and do him a solid.

On my own cars it depends. If the repair is going to piss me off and repeatedly bust my knuckles, someone else can do it.

If you are able… both are terrible to pay for.

I do my own brakes and not let some flunky who could give a shite if my caliper falls off 100 miles from now and rarely pay attention if they put the pads on the right side of the caliper.

Also, I do my own oil because i religiously use AMSOIL in my engines and like to see what the oil looks like coming out to see if there are any problems. And also check for leaks. Your oil change “”””technician””” isn’t going to alert you to any shiny bits in the oil or your valve cover gasket is starting to drip.

The techs at my wife’s Honda dealer send about 10 minutes of video before performing any maintenance (underside of car, brakes, engine bay, tires etc) that they record as they do their inspection.

I was really alluding to places like Jiffy Lube, Midas, etc. A ton of people do not go to the dealer after the warranty expires.

Yeah hers is still under factory warranty (dealer claims engine and drivetrain covered for life if you bought it there but I doubt it). After they get older I take them to a local shop I trust. Been using these guys for 15 years. They don’t just do oil changes but also major repair work.

I will and have done brakes, rotors, radiators, engine peripherals, belts, batteries, hood latches, lights and their fixtures, window regulators and door locks, fuel injectors, plugs, cd packs, etc…… I still like to do my own oil changes as well. I am retired so I do have the time and things like these keep me busy and my mind in order. YouTube is terrific and I have used it to fix almost everything needing fixing in my house over the years.
