Diy guys, help settle an argument

My cousin and I were arguing about the worst thing to pay for when it comes to car repairs. I know what my argument is, but I won’t say it here so I don’t skew the responses either way. Basically, we both do most of the work ourselves, except for engines and transmissions. We just have different approaches. One of us says you should do your own brake pads and rotors because they’re more important, so it’s better to control that part yourself, and that paying for oil changes makes sense. The other says that brake pads and rotors are worth the extra money to have done professionally, while oil changes are too easy not to do yourself.

You and your cousin sound poor.

Easy. This applies to other trades also. Look at the person that will be doing the work and then look in the mirror. The one that looks like they do the least amount of drugs will likely do the better job.

Wow folks 16 years and 6 years after I have been posting here are calling me a bot

I do my own brakes, it's not difficult to jack up one tire at a time. I can not get under my car to do an oil change. Hope that helps.

Also it was a simple question does diy make one poor? I thought most Ot Ballers joked about paying about planes, but only could afford it because they liked to diy.

Brake pads are easy. As long as you don’t run across some specialized tools you have to work around, it’s an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for a few hours (running to autozone included).
Oil changes are a mess….no thanks on that

It takes a C clamp, some wrenches and a YouTube video if you don't know how.
ETA: and an S hook.
It's definitely not worth the extra money if you have any mechanical skill at all

I'm poor af by supposed OT standards... I saw a joke to be made and wanted to be first to make it.

My husband does our erl changes and other, various car related witchery. I think diy is sexxy.

Oil changes are too messy and I don't want to get fined getting caught dumping my used oil. Brake job is pretty easy and way less messy.

I make good money but I like changing my oil and rotating my tires. This weekend I changed my oil and rotated my tires on mine and my wife's vehicle. Changed 3 vehicles wipers.
I do my own brakes. Save about $500 doing so. I do anesthesia for a living but enjoy getting my hands dirty.

If you have an O'Reilly's nearby, you should check and see if they have the specialized tools you need. Now for the surprise: they'll let you borrow them, no charge, just excellent customer relations.

If I had to pick, I would change my own oil and hire out the brakes because there are a lot of yahoo lube techs out there and it's cheaper to replace brakes than an engine. If you know how to properly change pads and rotors, do them too. Many people don't know to reface the hub, grease the slide pins and check other components while changing the brakes. Brakes are getting more complicated with electronic parking brakes and screw in pistons too, make sure to get YouTube certified before getting started.

My take is "why not both?"
I really don't trust most shops to do much of anything. About the only thing I have a shop do is an alignment and ironically it seems moist dealers do a good job as they are used to their brand's models and their alignment quirks.
If I was uber-wealthy, I'd have my own alignment rack and tire machine and balancer.
Since I keep cars well out of warranty, maintenance and repairs are a necessary skill.
I say DIY everything you can. Your toolset and experience will grow and you can save lots of money along the way.

I do both. I enjoy working on my truck.
