It’ll be interesting to see how this is received. Disney introduced Princess Tianna years ago and it was mostly a flop because little white girls and their moms move the needle. My guess is this movie will be out of the theaters quickly.

Are people really upset that a white girl is not playing a mermaid? Are all mermaids supposed to be white?
There are a lot of things people could mad about, but who plays a fricking mermaid shouldnt be one.

I don’t know if I buy this. Mulan and Pocahontas were successful movies that didn’t feature a white princess.

Maybe kids won’t care. The Little Mermaid is my 7-year old niece’s absolute favorite Disney movie. She has just about every Ariel doll or toy there is. She even has an Ariel costume and red wig. I showed her the photo of the actress as Ariel. She didn’t say anything about her being black. However, she was upset that Ariel’s hair isn’t red. When I said they might have her wear a wig, she seemed cool with it.

It’ll make money, there’s no disputing that. The rewatch factor and merchandising pay day will be very low though. Go to Disney today and most of little girls dress up like Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Ariel and Anna/Elsa with a few Merida and Rapunzels thrown in there. Not many Mulans or Pochohantas’ running around.

No one ever complained when Morgan Freeman was cast as "Red" in The Shawshank Redemption In Steven King's book, Red is a redhead from Ireland. Hence the little smirk by Freeman in the movie about when "Red" says "Maybe, it's because I'm Irish"

All I've seen are heroes virtue signaling about how only terrible people are mad about it. I've never actually seen, read or heard anyone who is mad about it.
