The 2 biggest advantages to staying on property is access to transportation and being able to use the park extra magic hours which can be up to an additional 3-5 hours in some cases at Magic Kingdom. Not to mention you get first crack at fastpasses and dining reservations. Off site guests can start booking 30 days out whereas on site guests can start 60 days out. If you're going during a peak time that could be a huge deal.

Absolutely. The FastPast and dining res things don't matter much to me. I prefer staying at a Disney property so I can completely relax. I don't drive anywhere while we're there. I always take Disney transport which is a HUGE plus, IMO.

I'm with you on that. The transportation to and from is the greatest advantage. However, if you have small children and want character dining the reservation access is a huge deal.

Well, it can be depending on which character dining you want and what time of year you're going. We went in late January and hit up the Ohana breakfast and breakfast at Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood Studios. That's all we needed. I, personally, don't need to eat in the Castle. If our girl wants to do a princess dining experience, I'll just try and book Akershus in Norway.

We did Akershus in February.

Pretty cool for the kids but the food wasn't very exciting.

Dinner at Ohana was the best meal we had all week. That place never disappoints.

How did you like that?
I'm planning a trip soon, and I'm considering staying off property or at the hotel at downtown Disney.

Basically, I have a lot of reward points and want to go somewhere. Can either get free flights and free hotel at Downtown Disney/off property.
Wanted to do NYC but couldn't find anyone who wanted to make a quick trip.
So I figured screw it, I'll go to Disney.

Works out well for me because I get free room & board. My family has a condo in the area. Can't beat that. We also either drive to WDW or fly and rent a car. I am pretty familiar with the property so I actually prefer to drive. I can't stand taking the bus system anywhere.

Otherwise I've either always stayed a Disney or Universal hotel on an previous visits. Although one time a friend and I went and we stayed at one of the Downtown Disney hotels. It was good for the price (I think around $100 per night) and was right across from Downtown Disney.

This.

We tried the Biergarten in Germany for the first time two visits ago. It too was a good meal and dining experience. It is very good for kids 12 and under as they can play and dance with the German band.

I'm also a fan of the Boma buffet at Animal Kingdom lodge.

Kinda I guess

It's a lot like Texas de Brazil. They bring you some side orders, chicken wings and potstickers to your table and then they walk around with steak and pork for you to eat all you want.

Their bread pudding dessert was incredible too

@OP

If you do stay at the POFQ, use a dessert or snack credit on a ice cream cookie sandwich at the hotels restaurant.

It's made by hand and its yuggeee.

My wife daughter and son split one and couldn't finish it.

We enjoyed the show but that food is awful for what you pay. I'm pretty sure some of the sausages were just bologna rolls they bought at the local Publix. Maybe I'm just not a fan of German food.

The problem with the PO resorts is there is a shared bus between Riverside and French Quarter. Also, FQ is a large resort but everything is up at the front. It can take a while to get from the back to the front for snacks and things of that sort. Also, back about 4 years ago we stayed in alligator bayou in Riverside and everyone of my kids got sick. A couple of the room in that section were reported on a few forums as having mold in them, personally, I think it was true, there was a musty smell in the room. They have since redone the alligator bayou resort.

Of the two, I would suggest staying at Riverside, not French Quarter. Better and more pools. Great walking path around the small lake there, and more bus stops.

No, you're thinking of the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show which is in an outdoor pavilion on the beach. I've never done that. Ohana is upstairs in the Poly and overlooks the pool, Seven Seas Lagoon and Magic Kingdom. It's a family style buffet crossed with a Brazilian steakhouse....and it's ridiculously good. I've been for dinner several times and it never disappoints. Breakfast was also very good. The juice blend they have there was so damn good. It had guava and passion fruit and some other stuff in it. I probably drank a whole pitcher myself.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that the French Quarter resort was too big. And the multiple bus stops at Riverside is the reason NOT to book there, IMO. shite can take FOREVER just to get out of the resort when you're trying to get to the parks or, as others have already pointed out, they can get full before they even get to your stop.

Never stayed here but I though it was one of the smaller resorts on property?

It is very small. That poster is confused on a few things.

At FQ, we had our own dedicated busses, not shared except for a few of the smaller destinations.

Have stayed at Port Orleans. Would stay there again. Like some in this thread are saying staying on site is definitely the way to go.

This. Take a look on Google Maps: LINK. French Quarter is at the bottom to the west of the Sassagoula River. The bus station is in front of the main building which is in the center and is directly in front of the pool. Now look to the north of that and you'll see Riverside which splits the river and has a large bus loop called "Bonnet Creek Road" that encircles the whole property. The main building is somewhat in the center, just across from the island. But you can easily see how much larger Riverside is when compared with French Quarter.

Not anymore. That's the way it was years ago. Now, the only place you get on a shared bus is from Downtown. Everywhere else they are separate stops.
