It was the biggest mistake conservatives, moderates, libertarians, and classical liberals ever made was assuming that these leftists would simply be losers that work as Starbucks baristas living with their parents for the rest of their lives. The British establishment in WW2 was throughly corrupted by Soviet influence, to the point that the UK adopted pro-Communist policies that endangered the UK.
When the Cold War began, we largely cut off British intelligence, because we understood the leadership and ranks had been penetrated by the Soviets. We had to assume that anything we told them, would be passed onto Moscow.
How did this happen?
It was the university system, and specifically the Anglo belief in academic freedom (freedom of speech). A generation of British students were taught by Communist professors. Some were simply ideologues. Others were actually Soviet agents. But the effect was the same. The Soviets were able to corrupt the system from the inside.
Academic freedom was a virtue that made us great, but it was also a vulnerability, which the Soviets exploited.
