Disney Plus has officially surpassed 100 million subscribers, less than a year and a half after the streaming service launched.
Executives announced the milestone during Disney’s annual shareholders meeting. The last time Disney gave an update on Disney Plus’ subscribers number was in February during its first quarter earnings; there, it announced that, as of January 2nd, 2021, there were just over 94 million. Although executives didn’t say what pushed Disney Plus over 100 million subscribers, the recent success of WandaVision and Raya and the Last Dragon likely helped. The next big series for Disney Plus is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, out on March 19th.

“The enormous success of Disney Plus ... has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content,” CEO Bob Chapek said in a press release. “In fact, we set a target of [more than] 100 new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.”

Disney executives originally predicted that Disney Plus would amass between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024. The company has blown past that goal and is now targeting between 300 and 350 million subscribers across all of its streaming platforms (Disney Plus, Hulu, ESPN Plus, Star Plus, HotStar) by 2024.

This just one part of why movie theaters will go away in the coming years.
It’s way too easy to just watch Disney plus right when the movie comes out versus having to deal with going out to the movies.
Plus there are urbanites wanting to be super loud and obnoxious in the theater when I’m sitting in my living room

These numbers are misleading. Disney plus is included with my Verizon account.
And my Hulu account.
And my Hulu account.

Have had Disney stock for 25 years, works for me

My credit card changed and they keep emailing that my “subscription will be cancelled soon.”
Just do it already!

You can thank covid and lockdowns for the acceleration. It's not really due to anything Disney has done specifically.

I signed up last night. I could be the 100Mth subscriber. Maybe Mickey will visit my house and do the hot dog dance.

you are still paying for it though...they are still getting revenue

They had a deal for like 12$ a month you got Disney+, ESPN+, and I think Hulu. Probably helped them get some people that were interested in the others

Is that worldwide? I don't find that surprising if so, there are a shitload of people with young kids. Dealing with my 2 year old not being able to watch Mickey outweighs any type of boycott I might want to support

New releases would be over $20 alone especially Marvel stuff on there. Cheaper to go in person and enjoy the experience. Plus would make it easy to pirate so no way studios agree to it especially with massive releases.

Just don't go watch scary movies especially on Friday and Sunday and on holidays like MLK Day

Not for a family of 4.

Wondering is this is mainly made up of parents, or single adults whose main personality trait is liking Disney

Glad I’m not the only one. I got it for my niece and nephew for Christmas and sister never even used it.
Grown men and women’s obsession with Disney is so fricking weird. I think my nail in the coffin was botching Star Wars. I swear people are just desperate to convince themselves the mandalorian doesn’t suck
