re: Discussion: Is Louisiana dumb or do the other opportunities hinder it?

Dumb. Louisiana is in trouble. Huge impoverished population. Huge government assistance population. Low high-paying job opportunities. Most educated and capable people leave the state after college. It's in a situation where it's just gonna keep getting worse and there's really nothing you can do about it. I think the racial issues will prevent any real change from happening.

I'll say if you take the brightest from Louisiana and put them against other states Louisiana would do fine.
Where Louisiana lacks is that bottom tier as many understand college is not important and they can make a great living without a college degree.
Personally I know several individuals who never finished college but are earning 200k+ a year working in the plants because they got in and worked their way up. Now, they've earned several certificates during their time but still.

It's dumb.
We aren't victims, either. We elect the people that put is in this situation, there's no conspiracies in our election.
If you look at how dumb the average OTer is and realize about 60% of the state is probably below that, you'll realize what the problem is.

Actually they changed the way they are teaching the younger kids with phonics etc and the scores are getting better so that's encouraging at least.

This definitely is an issue.
If there were a lot more high paying corporate jobs, I’m not saying I would have stayed. 75%+ chance I still would have left to go experience something else. But, the lack of good to great jobs has nearly 100% guaranteed I will never be back, which wouldn’t necessarily be the case if there was more opportunity.

Hopefully they have implemented cream pie prevention in Georgia education by now

I'm aware of the scores and see progress

I’ve never understood the media acting like the South is dumb while not recognizing the high black population. I’m not saying blacks are dumb because I have HS classmates who are way more successful than me. It’s just an observation.

If Louisiana didn't force the ACT test would Louisiana score higher nationally?
Easily. Many students taking the ACT do no more than fill out their name. Thousands of students take the ACT each year on the tax payer dime, with no interest in ever going to college. That is $88 per student. That is a lot of money.

Are you talking about the Cajuns? I’d like to buy em for how smart they are and sell em for how smart they think they are.

This is a sincere question, please I mean it, not trying to make fun
But other than kids or elderly parents. Why do you stay? You're smart and professional. Other than a job unless ownership/physical is an issue
has left Every other poster/person from this site that can, has moved away
other than family which is a reason I highly respect ,, sincerely

the whites of AL/MS/LA are less intelligent than whites just about everywhere else.
sorry, but it it's true.

There’s a brain drain. A lot of the smarter students are not coming back to LA and very few are moving in.

But not by much. If you look at statistical maps, a lot of the state's issues (crime, low education performance, and poverty) are concentrated in certain neighborhoods in NOLA, BR, Monroe, Shreveport and also small towns like Bastrop, Opelousas, Bogalusa, etc.
Would it be exactly like Vermont or Utah? No, but most of the state's problems aren't caused by bad ole MAGA country bumpkins that the libs tend to hate so much.
If Louisiana had a white supermajority, we would probably be similar to a state like Iowa, South Dakota, or Wisconsin. We would have a much higher average testing score and a much lower crime rate.

Louisiana has consistently rated last or next to last in education for decades, yet people in Louisiana hate everything progressive and are the most close minded people in the world.
Seems like they’d be more open to change, but nope…they’re dumb and wish to stay that way while the rest of the country laughs at them.
Downvote away…I’m sure “it’s like that everywhere”

You should brush up on history. Louisiana was one of the most economic populist states until the 2000's.
There was a "progressive" in the governor's mansion the last 8 years and the state's economy and quality of life declined the most in that time span. We spend the most per pupil in our poorer districts than any other education system in the world.
You people should really just stop coping if you want your home state to improve.

In general, people are lax. They live up or down depending on the norm around them. Public education is so farcically bad that it really doesn't provide a competitive contrast to private school. The main driver of private school enrollment is keeping your kids out of the public hell and cesspit options. The private schools just don't have to compete that hard because the majority of public schools aren't a real option. Combining the lower average pay with the added cost of private education weeds out those with common sense.
