Everyone can tip what they want. They just know people will pick a preset instead if using that muscle between their ears. It's like complaining about showing your receipt at wal mart when you willingly walked in to the store

tip fatigue and costs.
i still tip my usually percentages by i cant blame people for tipping less when restaurant meals have seen sky rocketing prices.

I tip at coffee shops when I plan to use them for at least an hour.

The cooks and staff need to eat too. Leaving a ten per cent tip for to go orders seems fair to me.
ETA: if you would have said “gotta afford weed too” then you may have a point.

I definitely noticed im tipping less on meals now. IT's not intentionally but I think this is definitely part of the reason. I almost roll my eyes when asked for one now, even if it's a situation where you should expect to be asked for it (sit down restaurant)

Ive stopped going to counter places that have tip machines. I can overlook the jars, but the credit card prompt is over the top.
I am with you on ALL of this...trust me. But is it that hard just to click "no tip"?

Normalize only tipping for exceptional service again, and we solve a lot of problems in this country.

Shoving the display or credit card machine asking for a tip in your face every time you pick up a to-go order can have a negative impact on people.
Or people can grow a set and just hit "no"

I never have understood why the wait staff's salaries are so reliant on the customer.
Exactly. It’s not my job to determine your pay. I’m just there to eat and go. Seems like every other country has learn to add service charges in their food and pay the employees accordingly. But here in the US, it’s a complete mystery.

Subway is the worst.
Try Newks "Grab and Go". You get a pre-made sandwich off the shelf and the checkout display asks if you want to tip.

Diners are leaving smaller tips
if you think you deserve more than a 10% tip just for taking my order, you are being unreasonably greedy.
if thats not enough, then go after the business that is not paying you minimum wages, not the customers already being charged way too much for your food
100% of all your customers will applaud you and support you forcing every restaurant in america to start paying every employee minimum wages.
do you tip the person who fixes your flat tire?
do you tip the person who fixes your engine?
do you tip the person who fixes your prescriptions?
do you tip the person who delivers your mail?

People are in here bitching about the food being too expensive as it is. Add a service charge and they won't go, which is perfectly fine.
But if you make servers at restaurants minimum wage workers with no opportunity for tips, you'll stop going to them because the level of service is going drop into the tank. Waiting on people in a restaurant is absolutely not worth $7.25/hr.
I waited tables in highschool and college and the money I could make providing exceptional service was 5-6 times minimum wage at the time ($5.15/hr). If they offered me min wage to do the same job, I would have quit on the spot.
ETA: Concerning situations where it's just "to-go" or "pickup" type orders, just be an adult and hit no when asked for a tip. It's not difficult.

Maybe the owner should pay them what they’re worth.
I don’t disagree with that at all. Why the system evolved this way is crazy.
People bitch because service is poor, the food comes out slow, etc. when often the issue is one if the cooks didn’t show up for work, two servers called in sick or they couldn’t find a bus boy.
If wages were decent, tipping wouldn’t be necessary. Perhaps Restaurants could get enough help. They wouldn’t have to rely on transient types, etc.

I think waiters and waitresses need to understand that when a restaurant charges a man 5% to use a credit card....that 5% percent is coming out of your tip.
I know it's not your fault but life's not fair and the piper has to be paid somewhere. Unfortunately that falls on you in this instance.

On one hand, you shouldn’t go to a sit-down restaurant if you can’t afford to tip. On the other hand, an Applebees-level restaurant can’t cost $75 for a family of 4. For some people, their choices are either tip less or don’t go at all.

quote:That is my issue. I will tip on to go orders and pick up at counter. I don't care about post tax tipping or service fees. But eating an incorrect entree and not having a drink during dinner (alcoholic or regular) is absolutely unacceptable.
The focus has shifted from delivering quality service to earn the tip to now pressuring customers to tip what is expected regardless of the level of service. Not shocking that this is the result.
