A buddy I worked with was addicted to diet coke. He started out with 1 a day, then a 6 pack and then at least a 12 pack. Every single day. If you saw him you would think he was a model of health. Not obese & appeared physically fit. Over a few years his blood pressure became near uncontrollable, his decision making more erratic and he became very untrustworthy. I'm not saying it's related but when they found him dead of a massive stroke at the age of 32 I couldn't help but think all the diet cokes did him in.

damn. That is scary. It is also crazy how our brains will easily addict to something, seemingly anything.

while it probably didnt help... i doubt this "caused" it. Hell i know tons of people that drink a couple cases of sodas a week.

I don't think they wrote "Diet Coke" as the cause of death either. I do know he made increasingly bad health decisions as the diet cokes increased. When I first met him he was a light smoker: 2, maybe 3 cigarettes a day. Some days he wouldn't smoke at all. As he became more addicted to the DC's guess what followed? 3 packs a day at the end. Same with food. A week before he died I watched him literally eat pizza & Doritos for 3 days straight.
It was like the DC's were the catalyst for it all. Was it the sole cause of death? No, probably not. Would he still be alive had he not been so addicted to diet Coke? I'm convinced he would be.

I fail to believe that everyone's body metabolizes stuff the same. Some guys smoke and drink until they are 100. Some can't handle it. Same goes with food and drink.

Artificial sweeteners taste like poison. I'm not surprised at all.

Of course, they don't. It's called genetics. Other risk factors can make certain stressors worse.

It's why efficacy for drugs is measured on a percentage of the test population.

I think this is probably more because only fat people drink diet drinks

Or people with conditions like Type I diabetes, which also increases stroke risk.

Dementia is an old age disease and they've changed artificial sweeteners enough times over the years that we can't establish causation.

People are trying to correlate every modern convenience to autism. It's a crap shoot.
