Consuming a can a day of low- or no-sugar soft drink is associated with a much higher risk of having a stroke or developing dementia, researchers claim.

Their findings have prompted renewed questions about whether drinks flavoured with artificial sweeteners can increase the risk of serious illness, as heavily sugared drinks have already been shown to do.

“Drinking at least one artificially sweetened beverage daily was associated with almost three times the risk of developing stroke or dementia compared to those who drank artificially sweetened beverages less than once a week,” according to the American researchers who carried out a study published in Stroke, the journal of the American Heart Association.

“After adjustments for age, sex, education (for analysis of dementia), calorific intake, diet quality, physical activity and smoking, higher recent and higher cumulative intake of artificially sweetened soft drinks were associated with an increased risk of ischaemic stroke, all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease dementia,” the co-authors write.

So if it is sweet or just tastes sweet it will kill you. The human brain loving glucose is kind of ironic.

More and more research is showing just how bad artificial sweeteners really are. They also can cause glucose intolerance and have been shown to contribute to metabolic syndrome.

I have accepted that there are some health risks drinking diet drinks. I guess my question is -

What is the % of that happening to the second group in the first place? If it's .0001% and now my risk is .0003% I don't really care. If it's 1% and my risk is now 3% I care a little.

One thing I came to peace with long ago - we are all going to die and it almost always has to do with what we do to our body with some exceptions.

Ugh, I'd rather have severe dementia and forget my family members than not be able to fit into my size 32s, thank you very much!

That sucks. Now I can't drink Powerade Zero or Vitamin Water Zero any longer. I guess good ole lemon water is all I will have left. Probably will find out too much of that will kill me as well

Does this only apply to diet sodas? Is the artificial sweetener in coffee or tea different?
