To me "died" implied it was sudden or unexpected. Passed away implies it was foreseen or anticipated for some time.

"Died" doesn't imply anything. It means that they stopped living. "Passed away" or just "passed" is a more gentle way of saying the same thing, again without any different implication.

I had "passed away" and hate "passed" more. Dead, died and death are the only proper way to refer to someone's death for me. I often have to correct clients who say "if I die" - the conversation stops right there and I point out that there is no "if," only "when."

People don't like to talk about death and don't even like to say the word "death" or "die." Some of it is superstition, thinking that talking about it can make it happen, or the simple fear of something that is inevitable. It leads to so many problems in healthcare and the law - people not making plans for an untimely or less painful death process - and causing themselves and their families needless hardship, suffering and grief. To be clear, this isn't caused by the semantics of death, but the supposed distinction between "passed away" and "died" is surely a symptom of that bigger problem.

“This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-parrot.”

When did died or dying become a bad word?
America, the land of eternal youth, has trouble dealing with death.

This becomes more and more true the less religious America becomes.

Monty Python had many good suggestions. I like "joined the choir invisible".

Depends to whom I'm speaking with.

If the departed is a stranger to myself and my cohorts then they most certainly died. Passed is for family and friends.

I say died and dying all the time. I don't mince words. Saying passed or passing isn't going to make a sad situation any more better and doesn't change the reality of it.

Died.

One thing I think our society has failed with is exposing itself to death. Funerals used to happen inside the house, and people were able to acclimate with it. Now it's this big boogieman, and just creates stress in all of our lives.

My uncle was dying from cancer a couple years ago and when it finally happened in hospice, he sent out a group text to everybody important and it went like this....

It happened. Uncle died ten minutes ago.

I always thought "expired" sounded weird. I've never heard anyone say that in person but you see it from like medical professionals/police etc on tv sometimes.

I'm not being insensitive, but are you saying he sent his own text out?
