Did you ever order anything from the back of Boy's Life Magazine?

I remember spending time in the library in elementary school flipping through Boy's Life magazine. I don't know why, but I always wanted a book safe. Never ordered anything in the mail back in the 80s.

Got a subscription to Boys Life for Christmas every year. Always wanted to order something from the ads, but mom and dad never would saying they were all crap.

Survival knife, magnets, and a few other things. The knife was crap. Couldn't sharpen it. But I guess being geared towards kids, you wouldn't want a super fine edge on it.

While the 80s is certainly a nostalgic time period for me, ordering through the mail kind of sucked. Nothing like picking out something that you really wanted and then waiting a month to get it

I ordered several things out of Boy's Life. I can recall the rubber $1,000,000 bill, and some kind of cheap pocket telescope. I'm going to think about it. I'm sure there was more.

I have never seen Scouts of any age that didn't want to buy a cheap knife.

Those shiny multi-colored Chinese pieces of junk break in a week, and they'll still always come back for more.

During the first three-quarters of the 20th century, Grit was sold across the country by children and teenagers, many recruited by ads in comic books from the 1940s to the 1970s. Approximately 30,000 children collected dimes from more than 700,000 American small town homes during the 1950s when the publication still carried the subtitle, "America's Greatest Family Newspaper."

I sent off to Charles Atlas once. Got a letter back telling me how much I could pay each week for instructions to become a body builder. Didn't really follow up.

That was probably from the back of a comic book, but pretty much the same ads.

I wonder how many kids learned magic.

That is genius marketing for these companies. Advertise in Boy's Life for crap these kids will beg their parents for.
