My great grandfather fought in the Civil War.
I never met, but read about him.

Everyone I grew up with had that same story, including me. When I did ancestry DNA, I expected some Native American blood, not a drop.

My fathers maternal grandparents were around till my mid 20’s. Paternal grandmother till I was around 10.
Knew all 3 but best memories were with the Maternals. Great grandfather was a big time coon hunter and we spent many nights running dogs with him.
Something i’ll never forget

I grew up with both great grandmothers. on my moms side maw maw Russo taught me how to cuss in Italian and made me tomato soup with those little pasta pieces in it. I helped her crack her pecans and pick her figs. On my dads side granny burgess owned a farm on 190 in walker I fed her chickens, shot her coons and picked her carrots. Every time I’d get stung she’d chew up a cigarette, mix it with ponds cold cream and smear it on the sting

My last great grandparent died 4 years before I was born. The closest I came to meeting them was meeting the sister of my great grandfather. I had to be no more than maybe 5 to 7 years old. Her name was Cora and lived in a nursing home. I don’t remember exactly how old she was but she was well into her 90s. She scared the hell out of me because she was so old she looked almost skeletal. Her eyes were like sunk back in her head. Freaked me out anytime we’d go visit her.

When I was born my two great grandmothers were alive, but they passed away before I was 5. My parents had me when they were in their 30s so they were old. I think both were in their 80s.

3 great grandmothers alive in my life, one died when I was 5 the other two when I was 17 and 20. Great grandfathers 2 one alive until I was 21 and one until I was 26. I spent loads of time with the great grandmother that lived until I was 17 and both of my great grandfathers. My great grandparents shaped me enormously.

There is a picture of me with one of my great-grandmothers who was in her 90s.
I also knew, briefly, the younger brother of a great-grandfather, (great-great uncle?) so the same generation , also in his 90s
I have a strange extended time family tree. My wife(no pics) and I are about the same age. Her grandparents were all born between the mid 10s to early 20s. Mine were all born late 1890s to mid aughts.
My father's parents were in their 30s when he was born and he was about 30 when I was born, so that's a stretch relative to folks having kids younger back then. My mother was the youngest of 12. Her father was almost 50 when she was born

Ah, the greats. There was a theme, young teen female with older non teen male... never met a great grandfather but great grandmothers were around. One mean as all get out, another was nice but dementia grabbed her from an age I could remember. Lots from that generation on my fathers side still lived in Italy and were alive, but I never met them.

I have had a very blessed life, but one thing that I wish I could go back and change is that fact that I basically never had a grandfather, let alone great-grandparents.
My mom's dad died when she was young and my dad's dad died when I was 4. My dad was estranged from his mother, so all I ever had was one grandmother. She was the best and I had her til I was 37.
But having a paw-paw would have been awesome.

My dad parents died when I was 4 and 8, both in their mid to late 80s. My GGPs on that side would have been well over 100 when I was born.
My moms parents lived across the country and only saw them a couple times a year. I knew my GGM for a few years, but only saw a couple times a year.
It’s always been a bit sad for me that I never had the opportunity to have a day to day relationship with any grandparent.

quote:Same. While in college, I attended my mom's dad's mom's 100th birthday. She made it to101. When I was a kid she always had peaches. Two sons did not make it back from WWII. She had pictures of them in uniform and framed copies of death letters from the Army on one wall at her house.
Never knew my great grandfathers, but I knew my great grandmothers well
My dad's mother's mother lived with my dad's mom. Saw her every Christmas for six or eight years.

I knew three of mine and saw them often. My great great grandmother was also alive when I was born, but died before I turned two and I do not remember her. All were on my mom’s side.
The last, my grandmothers mom, died when I was a senior in college. She was 90 and often stayed with my parents. Taught me to crochet and make chicken and dumplings.
I stayed with my grandfathers parents sometimes and still recall having Nilla wafers dipped in coffee with my great grandmother and standing on a fence alongside my great grandfather while he fed his cows.
I am very glad to have memories of them and had the chance to learn things from them about how they grew up. I wish my kids had known my grandparents better.
