I was thinking it was a neat idea to just fantasize about, if nothing else. But, I looked online and realize that there are no roads that connect Central America and Columbia.

quote:

The Darien Gap, a roadless region of swamps and rainforests that stretches 90 miles to the tip of Colombia, makes it impossible to drive the entire distance to South America. So we shipped the car from Panama to Colombia and flew there to pick it up, then drove south, through Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia to Argentina.

Confirmed on Google Maps.

Who the hell knew? I had no idea and just assumed it was at least logistically doable.

With a well equipped Land Cruiser I'm sure it's possible.

Is there a bridge over the Panama Canal that cars can drive over? I think that would be your biggest problem.

Yes, several of them.

It's not all that wide, just have to get clearance for the ships.

Yeah. I knew about the gap. Long before you got there, though, you'd probably get carjacked in Central America.

Yeah, I realized there's be a whole host of issues you'd likely face before getting that far. I just didn't know there was not a single road connecting the continents.

The Darien Gap is infamous for just being a completely untamed wildernous. Have heard many many horror stories of people who go lost for weeks just within a mile of the beach

Been a while since there was a gap thread on the OT. This disappoints though.

I figured getting through Mexico safely would be the biggest obstacle.

So when they gonna bulldoze this Darien Gap and make this drivable? been wanting to take the family down to rio in the next couple of years for some parades. Should be a safe trip.

Yes, the road stops in southern Panama in Darien. You probably wouldn't want to drive through there anyway.

One e-mail I received included a marriage proposal for my traveling companion, Nadia Hubschwerlin. Nadia is a childhood friend; we are not romantically tied. In my blog, I told her suitor: "I will be glad to be the witness at her wedding as long as you are a decent guy."

This dude's been friendzoned on 5 continents.
