Russian soldiers did when they entered Austria and Germany is absolutely horrific.

The ruskies I’ll forgive. They were simply giving retribution for the way the Germans treated their civies and pows when they first pushed Eastword.

The japs were just sadistic.

They may not have known the details or understood the scale. They had to have a general idea though.

I don't think there's really anything they could do about it and still survive.

I think they also knew how bad Communism was and once Hitler got them into total war they really didn't have much of an option if they gave it some thought.

I think they knew the gist of what was going on, but probably not fully aware of the shite that was going on in the concentration camps. It is really surprising how much influence a charismatic leader has over people of his country. You really don't have to look far at all even today to see instances where leaders have convinced folks that outrageous shite is sensible.

What the Russians did was a lot worse than they received from the Germans. For the most part the germans beat, killed and destroyed. The Russians did that and more to the point where even the genocidal maniac stalin had to order his commanders to get control of their troops.

SS was definitely in the Balkans. There was actually a Muslim SS unit raised in Bosnia.

I read the book D Day Through German Eyes. They were mostly brainwashed into thinking they were defending Europe from foreign invaders. A few even commented on how much hatred and anger the allies fought with, and had no idea why.

Eh. The Germans treated the ruskies like absolute shite. Hitlers commissar order pretty much gave the troops carte Blanche When it comes to the treatment of Russian civies and pows. Add in how they defined “partisans” and the use of wide pincer menuvers with the panzer battalions and the field wise ripe for atrocities.

I still forgive Ivan. They earned the right to do what they did.

Yes, they knew. The guys who did the killings during their invasions were just a detachment of the regular army. It wasn’t a secret.

Fantastic book. Also free online in many places. Super short, can finish it in a few hours easy.

What really shocked me was the near universal shock of waking up that morning to the wall of ships.

No has the right to do what they did. I am talking bashing newborns skulls in by the dozens and hundreds at a time. Raping children as young as 5 and 6 until they are dead. Nailing women to rape structures so they dont have hold there legs open and forming lines to rape them until they die. If you think they had that right then you deserve a bullet yourself.

See, that's the kind of thinking that gets lots of innocent people killed.

There were plenty of Germans who not only resisted the Nazis but were imprisoned for it. And many others who didn't support them but didn't want to go to jail. Yet they were all treated as though they'd been Nazi sympathizers by the advancing Red Army, often raped and brutally beaten. Why? Because German troops they'd never supported or had anything to do with committed their own atrocities. But they were German so it didn't matter.

Even some Polish civvies paid a similar price. They'd been slave labor for the Nazis but the Russians didn't care.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Germany was actively invading other sovreign countries. You don't have to have a degree in seminary to understand how bad that is.

What if the common sentiment was that the other countries were “evil” or generally a threat?

No, war gets a lot of innocent people killed.

But they were German so it didn't matter.

Just like the Russians who looked to the Germans as liberators when they pushed east. Didn’t matter if they hated Stalin and wanted out. They were Russian. So they met their fate.

It’s total war.

Absolutely. But total war is total war. And the Russians and Germans were fighting total war.

We weren’t fighting a total war against the Germans. Which is why we didn’t treat them that way and why they didn’t treat us that way.

I think they knew somewhat, but what could you do? They would come to your house and take any kids old enough to shoot. My great uncle was just a kid and they took him to fight. He escaped and the village took turns hiding him until the war was over. My great grandfather had to take his car apart and bury it around the farm. They just took whatever they wanted.

The SS in the Balkans were, as you state, locally raised ethnic formations of dubious reliability. Good enough for rounding up civilians with the wrong last name, and sometimes not even capable of that. The Waffen Ss as a coherent entity was absent from the Balkans.

it wasn't that simple. in a lot of cases if they protested what was happening it didn't mean that they were going to die. it meant that they were going to die and their wife would be raped to death and children would be sent to camps.

There have been studies on moral licensing, and how being told you are owed something or that something was taken from you leads to people violating their own moral codes. Have to wonder if that kind of thinking played a part.
