My buddy was a shift manger/new hire trainer at Guthrie’s in Athens back in 1988-1991

My buddy actually trained Zach - kid worked there a few weeks, stole the recipes & was off the the races (with an investment from Ray Goff of all people)

Same thing happened with the Canes franchise

100% copied - Guthrie’s now has a non compete… oops

Rumor has it that the Guthrie kids liked the nose candy and let the business go downhill - making a comeback now

Guthrie’s is way better than Zax (also a little more expensive, but well worth it); not sure about Canes, only time I tried it was NOLA later at night - was very unimpressed; but that is not a fair test…

We used to skip school and walk all the way from Clarke Middle to Guthries.

Zaxby's sold to Goldman Sachs last year for 2 billion dollar, but the two guys got to keep many of their franchises.

Plot twist was the nutjob son. I'm convinced he had serious CTE. He had some gnarly wrecks.

Where did Guthrie’s originate? Haleyville, Alabama.
My wife is from Haleyville, and I knew Hal Guthrie. We lived there for a while.

If that one is as good as the one in Tuscaloosa you need look no further.

IMO they’re easily the best.

Guthrie’s is better than both.

Cane’s is second best.

Wow I didn’t realise they took the whole box from Guthrie, thought it was just the sauce.

I look forward to trying the OG some day!

Lol cope dude, he took the entire box. That is pretty nuts. If a McDonald’s burger came with a blue crayon and a green chocolate shake and everybody started to serve the exact same thing it would be fishy too.

Extended family lived there when I was a kid.

Winston County, 67 started all the car tags back then.

I-22 has changed the drive from Birmingham, but it’s still out in the country.

I was(is?) a “dry” county.

Guthrie's was better than Cane's. Cane's had better marketing and service.

When I was in college in the early 2000s I would go to Guthries hungover AF and I swear I could have walked outside of Auburn to a farm, killed a chicken, brought it back and butchered it, fried it, and boxed it up faster than those frickers would make my box. None of those are very fast to this day. But holy hell Guthries early menu and maybe their menu currently was nothing but fries, chicken, slaw, and toast. There shouldn't be a walk in customer that takes more than 3 mins to get their order during the normal lunch and dinner times.

The one in Athens in the 90's that keeps getting referred to was nestled in between all the highrise dorms and typically only had one employee on staff at any given moment. That's why it was so slow. The same guy taking orders, counting out change, cooking, and serving. I don't know about the other locations but that's how the famous one in Athens operated.
