I stayed in San Destin last year and the problem is you're not just sharing the beach with other people staying in your building, they have buildings stacked 3 deep then some more across on the bay side that all use the same quarter mile of beach.

I only go to San Destin for a conference. I wouldn't go there for a vacation. Where we stay in Destin the beach is never crowded and the place we stay is on the beach so you don't have to pack a bunch of stuff and haul it down the elevator through the lobby across the parking lot past all of the other condos to finally get to the boardwalk that goes on forever until you finally get your toes in sand to sit on the beach for the afternoon. I can take about 25 steps from the glass door and I'm in glorious white sand and about 25 more steps and my toes are in some of the clearest water anywhere. We love it!

Fishing sucks in destin. The only thing worth the time to fish in
destin is cobia right along the beach. The "deep sea" fishing trips they take you on are over night trips to Louisiana waters.
But you're right about the beaches, restraunts and shopping.

And if you ever decided to pull that stick out of your arse there are a few nice bars in the area that even a mature adult such as yourself can enjoy.

If you go back during the summer rent a pontoon boat and take the wife and kids to crab Island. They will love it and it's a great way to spend an entire day away from the beach and pool at the condo.

I don't enjoy the traffic in Destin or the lines of tourists waiting to check out in Wally World.

My BIL has a condo just about a mile east of Seaside. I love it there. The beach isn't as crowded as in Destin, traffic isn't bad, close grocery and fishmongers, plenty of biking/running trails, and decent fishing in the little estuaries there.

Same here. Place we go is never crowded, as half of the units are not rented out (as on owner use only), the beach service is awesome (Same guy has been doing it for over 30 years) and, as an added bonus, for the time being, there is no condo next door, because they recently tore it down to make way for something newer and better. Plus, you can walk across the street for Chick Fil A and Alvin's Island, so there's that. Yes, it's older, but half of it is new, thanks to Opal, but the rest is updated, the grounds are kept up quite nicely, and you can walk out of the glass doors, through the patio and be on the beach in under a minute.

I like Destin just fine and it was the primary spot for us since way back, but we've been preferring Pensacola (Beach, for you tightasses) for several years due to being closer (makes a big difference with little kids in the car), less crowded and also like how it's close to a normal town. We generally hit Pensacola proper for one thing or another when we're there.

Drive a little further east to 30A. You won't like Destin anymore.

Destin is a great place and I have enjoyed the fishing there as well. The summer months are hectic and crowded, but it's not as bad as Orange Beach/Gulf Shores. I like going in the off season too. Pretty much everything is still open (except the water park ) and you don't have to wait in long lines.
