I’ve been through the same process with my wife twice already. She still does not understand the downstream effects of making one little subtle change here or there. When it comes to design she is incapable of thinking and visualizing in 3D. Two different mindsets. It can be really frustrating. I guess that’s why she is a banker and I’m an engineer.

I paid someone to do that job baw. Took weeks. I had zero involvement other than the figure on how much she could spend. Which she spent down to the last dime, plus 10% with changes. Prayers sent.

I’m a builder and in the process if a total reno. Getting close to the finish line, but my wife and I have never been more annoyed with each other throughout the entire process.

I do facility design and system equipment flow design for my job. Engineer by title, but not officially.

engineer by degree and have done some contracting/design, I played that down when we were designing our house and what we did was talk about everything we could possibly want in our new house, I hired an architect to fill everything on the wish list, the price tag of the original drawing was high enough to make her start thinking a little more logically so that was our starting point, start with absolutely everything you could possibly imagine and pare it down a little more realistically from there, worked for me, sort of put the onus, or it gave the appearance of putting the onus on the architect

I’ll have to submit the drawings (yes, plural) to an architect for blueprints. Maybe I’m getting a little too technical on the front end

You'll strangle her when you both sit and ponder the finishes

The more power you give her over this decision, the more it will cost, the longer it will take, and she'll want it changed in three years anyway.

you're in a tough position amigo, I'm way beyond PhD level in aviation but I would never in a million years attempt to teach my wife to fly, she already knows better than me good luck with that

Have a picnic with several good friends in the parking lot of an abandoned mfg plant. Lots of chalk. tape. TAPE MEAsures.

Have a good meal and then design the house. Limit the exterior walls to the sq. footage for a square house, and beside it a rectangular house.

Walk it out. Let her decide wall and window placement. The friends are there to erase walls and keep the math straight.

I am a Designer/Builder. My wife and I built our own home in 2020. Covid became a thing the weekend before the monday we were driving pilings. This after six months of design and engineering. We went to construction with ver 81 of the build plan. It was...interesting. We were ridiculed the first month for ignoring the fact the house would be worthless in a worthless economy, treated like royalty months 2-4 as we were the only people in the world who seemed to be buying/hiring for anything build related and struggled to completion the last few months due to materials/labor shortage.

During a build, my customers inevitably tease me on/turn into a drinking game my use of the term "domino effect". I get sick of hearing myself say it.

Three years? Try move in day. Infuriating.
