I knew with one of his last victims, Carrie Yoder. She was the long term girlfriend of my next door neighbor and good friend. DTL somehow got into her apartment near the south gates and abducted her. I remember her boyfriend saying she probably opened the door for him or he followed her in.

When she was murdered we all knew it was the serial killer. Zero doubt. Her body was found a week or so afterwards in the Atchafalaya basin. But when she was abducted my buddy was so upset that he wasn’t with her, that we all knew there was this serial killer threat but she was still alone and became a victim.

The news stations were outside our shared townhouse building for a couple of days trying to interview him, he hid in my place to avoid it all. Overall a very upsetting time.

Somewhat related to this but I was looking at a list of biggest serial killers in the world and quite a few of them were in Latin America. Guys that killed 100 to possibly 300 people but still get released from jail after like 10-20 years because those countries have a cap on the maximum years someone can be imprisoned. It’s crazy.

I moved into the apartments across the street and canal a week after that happened. FBI was doing surveillance from the apartment next door to me. Weird times.

Several months to a year later my roommate at the time got busted for steroids and pot. Wouldn’t turn on his dealers so they threw in Gen Pop for 30 days. Both DTL and SVG were there with him.

Middle aged women were watchful and scared otherwise not much unless you had a record and lived near a victim, then you got a DNA swab

The company I worked for had white trucks as our fleet vehicles. Our field tech that covered the West side or the state would get stopped and swabbed at least once a week on the basin bridge.

He was a stocky black man on the shorter side and must have been swabbed 15 times.

My father was on the jury that convinced DTL and is even mentioned in Tony Clayton's book about the DTL trial.

It’s a shame Pam Kinamore’s mom died before DTL. She was always on TV giving em hell. She had my vote to be the one to put the needle in him.

I lived at the Commons at the time with three other dudes so I myself wasn’t worried. I’d leave the door unlocked in an act of defiance.

But then a black guy tried to break into the room of the girls who lived right below me. One of them had a bf there who chased the guy away. Don’t know if that was DTL but at the time it wasn’t common for black guys to break into student apartments in that area so we always wondered. Police came out and dusted for prints but nothing ever came of it afaik.

The killer, if I recall, had to go to the hospital the night he killed her and either had a bandage on or there were scars, but the sister and killer had gone to the family house and I think the dad asked him what happened. Then the media came out and said the killer likely had marks or injuries.. cuts, etc on them. I think they found something with his blood or maybe under her fingernails that pointed to this.

He thought Mickey was dead and driving to bury her. Mickey had a pocket knife and fricked that dude up. Cut the shite out of his hand and then he shot and killed her. Tried to bury her but couldn't because of his hand. Drove to New Orleans to seek medical help and I think that's when he tossed her bike into the Atchafalaya. Then he drove to Texas and burned his vehicle and bought the same kind.

Thankfully an OTer helped break that case. It was always said he likely had other victims and the rumor was that ID's of missing women were found in his house, but nothing else ever came of it.

Wasn't there an indication that he'd killed a certain other woman as well?

He pled guilty to both Lisa Pate and Mickey Schunick.

My wife went to school with the son of one of DTL's victims that survived and didn't live that far from where it happened. DTL broke in to their home after finding out her husband wasn't home, he bashed her head and tried strangling her with a phone cord. Her son showed up and DTL fled.

Her son was able to identify the car and gave a description of DTL to a sketch artist who basically drew him to a and that led to him being captured. They tried getting the reward money from Lafayette Crime Stoppers but they were like "Nah...the reward is now expired...sorry".

I was in high school at the time, and I can remember everyone talking about it. Some of the teachers told the female students to go out in groups and not alone, etc. There were always crazy rumors.

So sad those young ladies died like that. I was younger when this was going so don’t really remember much about it. Looking at pictures of his victims I feel for the families that lost daughters, sisters and moms.
