Nelson asked about checking pulse with thumb.
Not suppose to do it because your thumb has a pulse. The officers kept using their thumb to feel for a pulse (from what I remember in the video). They may have thought he was still alive because of that.

No. He was trying to potentially explain why the officers may have thought there was a pulse.

With regards to drugs, stimulants such as methamphetamine or cocaine would dialate the pupils. Opioids such as fentanyl or morphine would constrict pupils.
There are other causes and someone could have anisocoria, which is pupils differing in size. It can be caused by traumatic brain injury such as a concussion.

The constricted pupils or dilation can be whatever is stronger or can balance out the effects; I've seen both. Multidrug on board you have to look at more than just pupils to get an accurate picture.
