Most are dying off as well
It's time to reorganize and consolidate all these small cities into regions and govern them to where resources can be shared and utilized to benefit their sustainability

Dothan, AL and of course Bogalusa take the prize in my observation.
I’ve lived in Dothan / Enterprise / Ozark / Daleville area for 4 years off and on since 2010. It’s a crown jewel comparatively.

There are no nice places south of Birmingham/Tuscaloosa except for Baldwin and Mobile Counties.

Buildings are completely dilapidated and falling apart
There's some properties on the square that could use a good renovation, but that's about it.
If you think Athens is depressing, you should really explore more of North Alabama.
Athens has grown almost 25% in the last decade and has grown double digits every single decade except one since the 1940's. They just built a brand new, sparkling high school. There is a nice - and relatively new - country club in town. I am pretty sure UE in the area is low single digits. It's basically a bedroom community of Huntsville now.
OleWarSkule is just kind of an idiot. That's all.
And I would look outside of North Alabama for truly depressing places in the South. Selma, Eufala, et al make North Alabama seem like Switzerland.

Old school buildings with great character but all the factories moved to China in the last 40 years. You can thank your Republican and Democratic politicians that sold us out for cheap labor for their K-street pals
Yep and it all reached a spectacular climax with the pandemic. Can’t produce the necessary products we needed because the vast majority of production comes out of China.

Razor towns, and they're not exclusive to the south.

Have you ever been to southern Illinois or Central Missouri or southern Ohio or eastern Kentucky or southeast Montana or southern Texas or the Michigan UP?
Small little shite towns Make up a lot more of this country Than most people believe

Serious question - why are small towns in the south so much more likely to be shitty than small towns in the Midwest or New England?

Because most of them have been poor for a long time.

t’s just depressing to think that people are stuck in that life and unfortunately are too low IQ / poor to better themselves.
I suppose its beyond your acumen to understand that some people may be content living as they do.

I mean, you spent much time in rural Illinois lately? Or rural Michigan?
I think one thing I've noticed is that the rural Midwest looks like it's better taken care of, generally, but that seems to be fading. My trips to rural Wisconsin on various golf outings over the last few years have been depressing as frick. Green Lake, WI was the definition of faded glory.

The forensic accounting of every politician over the last 40 years, complete investigation into money received and the corporations that paid them off. The family members that recieved jobs and professors that recieve "grants" from foreign countries. It's enough to make you puke !
Bingo. Well stated.
