Yes it was. Although the sustained winds weren’t that high but as a kid I thought our house was gonna blow away.

I swear Gustav felt like a much stronger storm than the category indicated for it. Didn't Gustav spawns lots of tornadoes which was the big thing for it? I know I saw tornadoes spawning off it in my neighborhood.

It was but Gustav gave Baton Rouge higher wind gusts than Andrew.

We got recon to watch but thats a pretty narrow audience interested in that. The lull between the Euro and the 4 pm is perfect for some bullshitting.

Totally agree. Thanks for your time and input and congrats on the new arrival!

BR people’s infatuation with gustav is incredible

It pretty much my benchmark on if I'm staying or going. I went two weeks without power and our neighborhood (Magnolia Woods) was a total fricking mess with a lot of trees down on homes. If the winds are going to be less than or equal to Gustav I'll probably stick it out. If worse...I'm packing up. A lot of people in BR are probably thinking the same thing.

Can we please for the love of god stop cluttering up this thread with arguments about Gustav?

Its completely irrelevant to this storm.

We've had titty milk and silo death topics, but you want to get butt hurt over Gustav comparisons, which is at least still a hurricane topic. Awesome.

Baton Rouge airport sustained winds:
Record: 86mph on 8/1/1959
Gustav: 61mph
Andrew: 48mph

I think people remember old storms as worse than they were. Andrew was a bitch for BR and had less winds than Gustav. Neither had sustained hurricane force winds, but Gustav has gusts of 91mph.

I’m thinking it will stay below forecast intensity. I think it may only get up to Cat 2 before it begins weakening prior to landfall.

I do think it'll get back to a 3 before weakening. It'll get some outflow help tomorrow plus warm enough water to get it there, assuming no eyewall replacements.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right and it doesn't get back up to a 3 but still expecting it to get to major as my base case at this point.

Since (so far) it’s a relatively small, fast-moving storm...

Will this keep the surge from being as bad in Lake P and Lake Maurepas?

I mean, less than 3 feet?

As I recall Gustav produced max sustained winds of 85 mph for BR. Baton Rouge is an extremely "treed" city, so there were trees and limbs down everywhere. Most of the city was out of power for 1-2 weeks...some longer.

It was a shite sandwich for sure.

This is why BR residents are concerned this could be Gustav Redux.

I don't remember it being that windy for Gustav, honestly. What I remember is parts of Zachary flooding because of bad ditch/creek maintenance. It didn't drop a ton of rain, but because debris got caught under low bridges, people got fricked with a few feet of water in some places.

You'd think that would be a lesson to how something so simple and relatively cheap can save millions of dollars worth of damage.

Looks like more agreement on track than anything. Compare to 12z:

Andrew knocked out power for weeks because it was an electrical system that was over 20 years old and no real way to manage outages yet. I'm not saying that could have been prevented just that was the reality of it.

If the track shifts 20 miles east, it could absolutely be likened to Gustav

Re: Comparisons to Gustav.

Since 2008 (and before) the trend for lot of newer subdivisions that have popped up in BR is to have underground power lines, and all of the trees clear cut prior to construction. I also know a handful of people from work who cut the close trees down from around their houses after Gustav and paid more attention to branches directly over the house. So, hopefully the infrastructure and general population may be able to take a Cat 1 with a little less impact this time.
