I think it is too small a body of water for lake effect to take hold. Also the water temperatures are too warm in comparison to Lake Erie. Is much larger at 56 miles across and over 250 miles long. Lake Erie is also fresh water compared to the brackish saline bay that is Lake Pontchartrain. Lake P has a maximum width of 24 miles across and 40 miles long.

I was just being an contrarian when it comes to lake effect snow, I’ll leave the actual facts up to the several posters who know what they are talking about.

It is just a water heater.

A HOT water heater would imply that the water is already hot.

Last week, I heard someone with the local water district say that with the ground temperatures and source water that the water coming out the faucet is averaging 50 degrees right now. So that temperature coupled with the right amount of release or running of the should prevent pipes from freezing.

If you have a recirculating pump with a dedicated loop,

Then you indeed have a hot water heater / maintainer depending in heat loss moving through wall or attic space. Of course this is based on your definition of "HOT".

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard any other name, outside of hot water heater. I wouldn’t know what else to call it.

Does a toaster imply the bread was already toasted?

I recently watched an old Family Ties episode where Skippy and Mallory were trapped in a basement, and Skippy broke what Mallory called "the hot water heater."

That factoid should put an end, finally, to the name debate.
