Salespeople, sales managers, and even F&I guys often view that $425 doc fee in LA as a mandated fee, sales people are often schooled that way.

The fee is not mandatory, however if the fee is charged to one person it must at least appear to be charged to all customers or face discrimination claims.

The most powerful information you have is prior sales, dealer cost, etc. do your research on a fair deal, and contact dealers until you get one. When you know your price, the deal is much less painful.

It sucks it’s one of those things you have to research so much, but you will lose thousands if you don’t.

In a word, no. Doc fees are clearly on the negotiable side of a car sales contract. There would not be a presumption of discrimination but rather you would need to show a pattern of discrimination. If the dealer is concerned about it they can simply remove $425 from the price of the car on the contract. Some will do it because they are not allowed to remove it based on dealership policy. Dealerships sell cars with the same MSRP to different people for different prices, it is common and expected in the industry.

I think when you have problem that escalates to Toyota corporate (south region) you have to really ramp it up to get past Jacksonville, FL. Toyota USA buys and distributes the cars from Toyota Japan.

If a price was advertised, and then was materially increased on anything other than TTL, I would walk out after laughing. Why in a million years would I trust a dealership that lies about something like the price?

Things would be much easier if the price was the price, at least for new cars.

If idiots stopped paying idiot prices for things they can't afford, we would be in a much better situation overall.

The fiances car is starting to show its age and have issues, and my Jeep will have some small problems getting any sort of MPG in the near/intermediate future, so we will be in the market for at least one vehicle. For a 3 row vehicle, the prices are absolutely retarded, because waves of idiots have no idea how to negotiate and buy within their means.

Here is a quote I just got from a dealership in Florida:

I asked for the OTD price in my very first email after they responded to my inquiry. Took them 5 hours and back and forth emails from multiple people to provide this.

On a Toyota, you should be looking at dealerships above the Mason Dixon line. We pay a premium for being below it. Also, they usually won't deal much on new Toyotas, they don't have to. Used is another story. You can usually find a gem somewhere. Just do your homework.

It's a game you play every 7 years on average. You are a participant whether you want to admit it. Salesman is getting spif's on the add on. You know it and he probably suspects you know it.

You got a price from a competitor....you presented the local guy with that price and deal offered. Game on

I’ve decided to not play any games. I picked a dealership and a sales guy I like. When it’s time for a new one I call and tell him it is, he has all records on mine. He finds what I want or waits for it and calls me when he has it. I tell him to draw up the paperwork and tell me what I owe. I drive over toss my keys to him sign in three or four places(I refuse to do the finance manager shite with the electronic screens) hand him a check and drive the other one off the lot. I rarely hear of a deal much different than the ones I get. We have bought our last 5 this way.

I'm in the market for a new one, looking at Honda. Been awhile since I had to buy car, what is the process to get what the dealer paid for the car, do you have to get that from the deal themselves? And what is the formula to know how much to ask, is it a percentage off the dealer cost? Doesn't the dealers get incentives you can take off to reduce the new car price?

I generally dont get into that stuff, I think you are playing a game that you just cant win. I have a number that I need, I tell them that number when I call, I dont give a shite how they get to it, give me more on trade, less on price, more on incentives, whatever it is..work your little magic car dealer games.

I’ve learned the best thing you can do is walk away and then you magically get a much lower price. I recently bought a new vehicle and we haggled back and forth a little and I asked if that is the lowest they can go. Salesman said yep. I said well I’ll go home and think about it. He then said hold on and went to the “manager” and it was $2k cheaper all of a sudden and we made the deal.

Now the finance people are a whole other story. I turn down any and all extra warranties and such, but they still try like hell. If you want an extended warranty it is usually much cheaper to shop around.
