There's enough death and destruction in the world but people feel the need to video everything for some likes. Society is so damn twisted.

Nah if the deceased was an 18 year old male. She made it, towards the end she is breathing.

The initial malfunction I get. Nobody is filming their kids/friends on a ride hoping it breaks in half but I dontt see the point in filming people dead/dying or severely maimed and injured. Doesn't make any sense to me.

The last fair I went to, there were a bunch of illegals running the rides, kids running the impossible to win games, and a mixture of homeless looking folks helping operate a variety of different shite. If you can fog mirror you are a carnival worker.

The fair that came to our town uses Eastern European college students. Very courteous and clean cut.

I really hope those 2 legs on the ride don't belong to the same person.

I was shocked at how nice they looked and acted. I think they were from New Zealand or Australia. Some really hot chicks working the games also.

The "extreme thrill" rides are simply too complex to move from place to place, especially when you take them apart and reassemble them each time.

The old time carnival rides were very reliable because they were designed to be robust enough to take being disassembled regularly and moved around. The tilt-a-whirl cars have two wheels - their only moving part - plus a hole where the car is attached to the moving platform.

The Scrambler is the same way, and more importantly, you can easily see all the moving parts and pins.

18-year-old killed on Ohio State Fair ride was a Marine recruit

quote:

The 18-year-old killed on the Fire Ball ride at the Ohio State Fair Wednesday night was a U.S. Marine recruit, according to the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Charleston, WV.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Poolee Tyler Jarrell's family and all those affected by his loss," a statement from Public Affairs Chief Sgt. Caitlin Brink said. "The Marines are greatly saddened by this tragedy. We are truly proud to have known him as one of the brave few willing to step up and serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps."

Jarrell was scheduled to attend basic training at Parris Island in South Carolina next summer, Brink said. The young man hoped to become a combat engineer.

He enlisted only five days before he died.

State officials said the "Fire Ball" ride had been inspected earlier in the day before it "malfunctioned" at 7:24 p.m. Videos initially posted on Twitter, showed part of the ride breaking off mid-swing and throwing riders through the air.

quote:

In addition to Jarrell, of Columbus, seven other people were injured: Tamika Dunlap, 36, of Reynoldsburg; Russell Franks, 42, of Columbus; Keziah Lewis, 19, of Columbus; Jacob Andrews, 22, of Pataskala; Jennifer Lambert, 18, of Columbus; Abdihakim Hussein, 19, of Columbus; and a 14-year-old male victim whose name will not be released.

Dr. David Evans of OSU Medical Center, which received three patients from the incident, said "multiple passengers were ejected at high speed" from the ride, traveled at least 20-30 feet and then "crashed at a significant distance from the ride."

I don't understand how those kinds of rides are allowed at fairs. Seems way too dangerous.
Really? What are the long-term stats on such rides? I'd guess they're markedly safer than just your car ride to the state fair itself.

They don't keep stats on specifically carnival rides, but for amusement rides as a whole, the latest I've found was 2011.
quote:

According to the most recent statistics, in 2011, around 1,415 people were injured on amusement park rides in the U.S. That sounds like a lot but people took 1.7 BILLION rides in 2011.

That means only 0.000000008% of amusement park rides ended with someone getting injured. In other words, only about one out of every 1.2 million rides ended in an injury.

While they don’t have firm stats on the number of deaths, “USA Today“ believes there might’ve only been one amusement park death in 2011.
What might surprise you the most are the types of rides that seem to have high rates of injury. Though not fatal, most accidents seem to happen on what you might consider “smaller” rides.

One study tracked accidents and injuries resulting from amusment park rides and found that almost 21% of injuries took place on merry-go-rounds or carousels.

LINK

Witnesses say that when the ride was going up to the right a guy was slipping out so the operator hit the emergency stop button. After it went to the left and the seats fell off and two people fell out of another portion of seats.

Thanks. Like I thought, they are absurdly safe. And those stats are just "injuries" - who knows how minor of an injury is included in the numbers. I'd be shocked if fishing weren't much more dangerous too.
