Was it two recreational boats? It’s not easy to hit another rec boat at night as there’s so little traffic. Boating at night is really about speed, it’s not very dangerous going slow. It’s dangerous as frick to go fast.

Some people fish for bass at night. Most of the time when I catfished we started at dark and fished until the sun started to come up. Frogging at night is something else we would do.
Not saying that was the case in this incident but lots of people fish at night.

Driver of the pontoon boat was sober and going to help friends when the center console came around the curve on plane and hit the pontoon boat.
Everyone went in the water and the pontoon boat driver didn’t surface.
His body was just recovered.
A passenger on the pontoon boat died on impact.

Where did it happen? Near the bridge?

In the curve near King’s Point

13 on board and only 2 fatalities with no life vests and a capsized boat is close as you can get to a damn miracle.

I remember being young and going on boat rides on Lake Verret at night. The guy driving our boat was in his 50s, sober, and an experienced driver but out of nowhere we were hit by some young guys in a boat with no running lights. Scary as shite. I can’t imagine how dangerous it would be on a narrow river.

I see boaters navigating many mornings with those damn light bars or q beams blinging other boats and themselves.
Light bars on transoms, multiple green/red lights all over the boat.
Honestly, I prefer the over-lighted boats to the ones with no lights. I sit outside late at night and early in the morning at the camp and I bet every 3rd boat doesn't have a single light on. Sure mixed up nav lights are a hazard but I would rather know a boat is there and have a chance to figure out how it is moving than no lights and the boat just pops up out of the ink on my bow.

From WBRZ Article: "Blood was drawn from the operator of the Sea Fox."

This would be my concern. Night cruising actually sounds like a good time. Problem is I'd be too worried about some idiot out there running without lights/too fast.

Don’t be so quick to judge. You can be on a place at 15-20mph. It was also said in another thread the party barge had no navigation lights on.

Especially in the summer it is great. Cool and generally quiet. My wife and I tend to just loaf along at a high idle and stay between the weir and Black River on the Diversion because outside of the turn at Smith Bayou it is all straight and there is plenty of room to stay out of anyone's way. Being protected water it is almost always like glass at night.

The operator of the sea fox will be toast if he is found to have been intoxicated and all his friends that were onboard will no longer be friends. They will drop his arse in a second.

I’ve done it plenty of times in the past 40 years.
We’d hang out in the lake all day, go back to the camp and sometimes take a midnight ride to go shine gators.
We never drank and never got over about 10 mph.
There lots of people on the water after dark. Unfortunately many of those people are drunk or very inexperienced operators.
