Since most of my day is in calls with people now, including a couple hours of calls with big groups of people, this happens a lot to people, even happened to me once. Possibly over the next couple hours in this call.

Constant chatter, and then you hear YOUR name called.

Do you go for the honest approach, or the bullshite approach?

I'm sorry, my dogs were barking so I let them out.
My kid's school called.
Plumber is here.
My Internet connection is bad

or

I was taking a dump, sorry...
I was busy on TigerDroppings, sorry...
I fell asleep, sorry...

Politely reply, "pardon me, I just had to change grandpa's catheter", they'll leave you alone.

Just be honest and let them know that you couldn't care any less about the call and hang up.

I’m sorry, you’re breaking up. Can you get closer to the microphone and repeat the question?

It’s the new normal. More reason we all need to be back in the office.

Good workers are now doing the bare minimum.

People that did the bare minimum before, are not doing their jobs up to par.

People that were below par already are non existent.

Start talking about some universal to the kind of work y’all do... even if it has nothing to do with the question it’s probably something that needs to be discussed

Unfortunately I have to agree with this.

I just tell them that I was on the phone with a customer or supplier and then ask them to repeat the question.

The only plausible explanation and excuse. Chicken could hire you as the TD official recruiter

Click mute and unmute over and over. After about six seconds, start saying you’re having trouble with your mute button as you continue to click it. They’ll move onto the next guy.

Disagree wholeheartedly. The problem is meetings and not being able to “not do work” during the day. Meetings in general are garbage and pile up actual work. If a job is required, as long as it’s done on time, why does it matter if I didn’t do anything for four hours but got the job done in required time?

The problem is that bosses don’t think employees are human and have lives but machines that require constant work. The idea of a 40 hour work week is the problem. It should be “required work during a work week”. Being at a desk just to be at a desk is wasteful to every business because of waste of resources to keep them at the office. Being at home reduces resources by having smaller office buildings, less utility costs, less maintenance. It also improves quality of life for the employee and might even take a pay cut to work from home.

Start talking, but silently. When they start saying you are on mute pretend to check, and then mouth, “I’m not on mute.” Keep appearing to be fiddling with settings. They’ll eventually move past you.
