Yep. And I would ask them to offer identity theft monitoring for at least 5 years, not just 1.

Close all bank accounts that this CPA had information on.
Activate two factor authentication on all financial accounts.
Brokerage accounts, see what you can do to change or lock those down.
Freeze all three (did the fourth one ever take off?) credit monitoring agencies.
Pull credit reports.

This happened to me right here in Baton Rouge a few years ago. Luckily I caught it when I got a change of address for from the USPS

La doesn't have a business named "more song decisions" according the the sec of state. Also looked in Cali, obviously, and they didn't either. I spent about 3 seconds trying to figure out which state to check next and I realized just how much profiling I was committing. I am torn between helping you or not being raysuss.

If they are reputable they have Data Breach insurance coverage, so they should have forensic teams available to help with figuring out what’s been compromised and to also recoup any funds lost they are responsible for. Their carrier will pay for it most likely. I would definitely sue if you lost money because of this and they are not making you whole.

As someone mentioned above, go to Transunion, Equifax and Experian websites and freeze your credit report (write down or print the PIN numbers you get from them and put them in a safe). You also need to go to www.identytheft.gov (a federal trade commission site) and fill out a fraud report. This will a give you a link to chexsystems where you can see if any accounts that you have not authorized have been opened using your information, and will give instructions on how to dispute such an issue. FTC site will allow you to put a fraud alert (apparently more than just a freeze) that will last for a year in addition to the freeze on your credit - with the fraud alert, you file with one of the credit agencies, and it is automatically reported to the other two. You will get something via US mail confirming this.

Also I would use a password program such as 1 password that will flag vulnerable passwords and allow you to keep complex passwords with a holding tank so you don't have to write them down somewhere.

Also as someone else mentioned, you need to turn on two-factor authentication with any of your financial instituitons.

Same here. Over the past 5 years I have put more time and effort into data security than I ever thought possible. My IT company monitors 24/7 for any breaches but it can still happen. I would have to think the loss of clients has to be high in breach cases.

This (a data breech) happened with our CPA several years ago. We had to go to the IRS office and file this form. The process was painless, but disconcerting.

Nothing negative has come from it (yet).

Believe me, I am considering a lawsuit. After this incident I've come to realize the tax thing wasn't just a one off. I may be dealing with this for the rest of my life.

Have the firm write off legal fees you incur from suing same firm. That would be awkward.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I just heard from my bank, the check that went through yesterday with the name, More Song Decisions LLC, probably doesn't have anything to do with the data breach at my CPA. Evidently there are a number of patrons at different banks that have had the same thing happen to them. The security team at my bank was able to recall the money so no one lost anything. Just some kind of "check fraud scheme" is how the bank put it.

I'm so paranoid right now, my phone wasn't working yesterday..... DATA BREACH, they have my phone!!!! Working fine today.

Hope all is well on your end.
