Data breach at my CPA

Got a call from my CPA last week stating that I needed to come to their office and sign my returns. When I told them I had already signed them the week before they said my returns were rejected. They had a data breach and someone had filed a return with my ss#.
Now, this morning when I checked my bank account, (as a matter of routine) I noticed that a check for $29.91 had cleared my account. The check was made out to More Song Decisions LLC. Have no idea who or what that is. The check is not one of mine, it looks electronic. There is no signature, no address, etc.
I'm off to the bank to dispute the check and see about all of this.
BTW the CPA has offered insurance through Zander. Anyone heard of this service? Do these services work?
If this was supposed to be on Money board then I apologize. I wanted more people to see this so they could be aware that this is happening.

Do you know what software or cloud service they were using? If several were hit I would imagine some larger service had a breach.

If my cpa had a data breach and then tried to sell me identity theft insurance I'd find another cpa.

Don't have a clue. When I asked what exactly was stolen and how, she just shrugged and said, "we don't know." I didn't think to ask about systems and such. I doubt they would have told me. She was very defensive when I did ask questions.

In that case take them up on it. I don't have any experience with that company but Dave Ramsey recommends them

Data breach likely happened from an employee being tricked in google chrome with a fake update.
I would be pissed they were defensive about it. shite happens, and when it does if you are defensive I’m leaving for sure.
I guess I would take the insurance since it’s free but I would drop it after a year.

frick that. I would require something more concrete. They are "defensive" because they are 100% liable for this. If you already have a fake check coming through, you can expect this to continue.
The federal government managed to lose all of my info to the Chinese and I got lifetime credit services out of it. Would much prefer to not have had my info given out but at least i have the coverage.

Believe me, I am considering a lawsuit. After this incident I've come to realize the tax thing wasn't just a one off. I may be dealing with this for the rest of my life.

As a CPA, this is one of my biggest fears. We take a number of precautions to protect client info, but I know several CPA firms that have dealt with this, and it is an absolute disaster.
We have insurance to help if this ever happens, but the credibility hit is huge.

You should have also signed IRS Form 14039, Identify Theft Affidavit. If not, may be time to find someone else to do your taxes.
