without trying to cheat heirs out of their inheritance.

How bout those heirs be involved with their parents enough to make sure The Parrain Lanier don’t make a pledge he can’t
Keep?

Maybe St.Jude’s is wrong. But maybe this dude shoulda been close enough to his father to know what the old man was doing. The old timer didn’t even own his home. But he still wanted to try and donate the proceeds of The home sale: money he didn’t have and wasn’t his.

Perhaps the Lanier kid is the greedy one who is trying to keep every bit of the tiny estate his father
left him and is pissed paw paw pledged
Money to St. Jude’s about which he was unaware. Greed isn’t just a sin of big corporations.

My mom used to see people in 80s who thought they were giving their estate to jimmy swaggert when they died only to find out he didn’t have to wait until they died. They would take everything and move them into the street. Some great Christians

This is a lie. There is a way to will your estate upon your death to the Ministry, but they don't throw people out on the street. This is absolutely false.

Getting a 200k loan finalized within the 10 day window would likely be difficult for most people.

This. I am sure a lot of people bad mouth St. Jude’s when they don't get all of their parent's money. I am giving a shite ton to St. Jude and this thread changes nothing about that. I am sure St. Jude has to fight greedy families ALL the time and they atent just a bunch of selfish assholes all lawyered up for fun. Just involved legally as rightful heirs against pissed non-heirs on the regular.

This could have been avoided by updating the will when his circumstances or intentions changed. So many people neglect to do this, and so many lawyers neglect to advise their clients to do so.

Anybody with a functioning brain knows if Jimmy Swaggart was abusing the will process to kick people out their homes it'd have been front page news at any point the last 40 years.

That ministry takes a lot of crap from people but this is beyond absurd.

He offered $25k, which wasn’t good enough for St. Jude. Two courts said he was correct and St. Jude was wrong. I donate to St. Jude and will continue to do so, but this story does not put them in a good light.

I definitely recall reading in the '80s news articles alleging Swaggart trying to take advantage old senile people to get control of their estates. This sort of charge against him is not new.

But that’s kind of the point, right? He couldn’t keep it. He pledged $100k from the sale of a house that he did not own. At that point, St. Jude probably should have walked away. Instead they took the family to court and ultimately lost anyway.

Another example from the same article:
quote:

Most importantly, the charity knew the couple planned to leave their nearly $6 million estate to St. Jude. But Nona died before J.D., and after he changed his estate plan — reducing St. Jude’s payout by about $2.5 million — the charity went to court, triggering an expensive, drawn-out legal battle that pitted the hospital against several of J.D.’s family members.

So a bunch of people pledge money to St Jude when they die, and then through some circumstances, the family members are legally able to retain that money, but St Jude pursues a legal option to ensure that the promised moneys go to the correct place, and somehow this is St Judes fault?

I can see that they want to make sure previous pledges are honored and not usurped by family members. BUT, there are some very unscrupulous practices in there that are quite disappointing.

The other tidbit from the article is that there are only 73 beds available at the hospital.

Thanks.I had already posted enough about the article, but what St.Jude is doing is not okay. It seems to be pretty aggressively going after what "they" want, not what is right.

Yes, THAT was an interesting find. I always assumed they had hundreds of beds.

That’s just completely incorrect. St Jude used to have only around 90 inpatient beds, but the majority of their treatments are outpatient. The have huge outpatient clinics. Several years ago they built a new inpatient wing which I believe doubled the size. They also contract out with Leboneure pediatric hospital for car not related to cancer.

Anyone stirring up shite on St Jude is a sick individual, it’s probably the most well respected and philanthropic organization in existence
