i know a lot of parents feel the same way the dad does. Kids now feel like it's a punishment to go outside. When they gave us a football and basketball we was happy to play outside with our friends. My wife's nephew is 12 and all he wants to do is play call of duty all day everyday. I'm happy my 7 year old still likes to play outside a lot even though he has a game system but is not always on it.

Smart move. If he plays too much Call of Duty he might shoot up a school one day

Maybe the dad should have put his phone down and go play outside with his son?

Our Xbox is available to our kiddos on weekends only, and they have to "check it out" just like a library book.
It is also given to them with limited time limit which is earned with good behavior during the week.

Heaven forbid kids do what they enjoy.

The kid is minding his business and keeping to himself. Why do this?

This is insane. It's just going to make the kids cave it more and become addicted. How about you actually teach your kid to be responsible and play responsibly like a real parent?

Fathers are no longer teaching their children basic life skills like making a catapult [slingshot], repairing a bike puncture and skimming a stone
Reading maps and pitching tents are also among the lessons not being taught
More than two-thirds of 1,000 fathers say their own father was more 'hands on'
Survey found more than 60 per cent of children prefer computers to outdoors
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Fathers are no longer teaching their children life skills such as reading a map, riding a bike and pitching a tent, a poll suggests.
Children are also missing out on learning how to swim, catch a fish – and even how to make a good cup of tea.
More than two-thirds of the 1,000 fathers polled said their own father was more ‘hands on’ when it came to passing on life lessons.
Three in ten fathers admitted they have never shown their children how to tie a tie, while 29 per cent have never demonstrated how to buff and polish a pair of shoes.
The survey also found that 60 per cent of children would rather play computer games than venture outdoors. Most fathers said they plan to switch off the TV, unplug the games console, hide the tablets and laptops and get their children outside this summer.
Ed Burgass of Fishing TV, which commissioned the study, said: ‘The survey has revealed some really interesting insights into the things we teach – and more importantly don’t teach – our children. ‘As the study has shown, families are no longer fishing together like they once did. As a child, I went fishing with my father regularly and some of my fondest memories are from the river bank.’
For two-fifths of fathers, the problem seems to be time – they said they are simply too busy to teach their children these skills. But more than four-fifths of those polled said they would love to spend more time with their children doing outdoor activities – and that isn’t always for lack of trying.
Six in ten fathers said they would struggle to get their children away from the games console and out of the house. And more than a third of today’s children have never been camping, the poll found.
Around half of the fathers said they often row with their partner over the lack of time their children spend outdoors.
Three in ten fathers said they have tried to get their children interested in the same pastimes that they enjoyed when they were young – but to no avail.?

I play with my son on the PS3 and the old game systems but he still enjoys going to the park and playing in the backyard. Growing up we played a lot of sega and Super Nintendo but we still enjoyed of playing outside with our friends.

Meh. My son would rather be outside playing basketball, throwing football, killing lizards, shooting birds, setting his bird traps, fishing, etc.
He has some devices, but that's what he plays on at night.

My dad taught me a vast majority of those, and I still played multiple hours of video games a day. Guess I learned time management at a young age.
Any parent who deprived their kid of something they enjoy, as long as it isn’t negatively effecting them, is a terrible parent.

While I don't agree with his methods, at least he's trying to curb screen addiction unlike these parents you see everywhere who can't put the phone down.
