It's really just algorithms that can "learn" on their own by collecting more and more material over time (text, images, etc.). It's not truly "conscious."
But, yeah, it is exploding right now. First the chat bots, now the image/video generation. It's pretty good now, but in the near future it will be 100% indistinguishable from real.

Like every other technology, it has pros and cons. For business, it will save on artists and some forms of marketing/advertisement costs. You don't need to be an artist or graphics designer to tell the machine what you want for your next advertising campaign. You can just tell the machine and it will output it.
The cons will be deep fakes. Google and the big companies are keeping their AI filtered and under control. That is to say, they won't allow it to create images of Trump or Biden or celebrities to be used maliciously. Same with their AI text generators - they filter it so it can't be used for "fake news" and what not.
The problem is they aren't the only game in town. You can now get your own open-source machine-learning code and do it yourself.

You could make the same argument about every tool and machine humans have invented. The tool you typed your post on uses various for of AI precursors all the time.
Tools and machines are part of human evolution not instead of it.
As for how AI ends up I have no idea but I have been biased by things like Skynet.

There is one company that basically invented the text to speech technology and sold it to a million different website services so it looks like it is everywhere because all of the websites are promoting the shite out of it BUT it’s the same exact technology on every single website just marketed under a different name
