well that's just plain wrong. Is that the main job? yes. but every interview I've ever been in on I was asked how I build relationships with my students/athletes. It's 1000% part of the job.

there's a difference between this and a dude diddling little kids. this girl might be 18 for all we know. it's inappropriate for sure, and he has no business teaching, but i think your "final" solution is a little strong.

I’d rather over correct for now.

Your job is to teach a subject matter in a manner that students can learn from. Building a relationship with your students should not be part of it.

What about the teachers who go see a student's piano concert because they have been speaking to the student about his/her love of piano? Or the high school coach/teacher that talks to the boys about his time in the army or job experience. None of this is school related or subject matter related.

Teachers spend hours with our kids, having them develop HELATHY relationships is fantastic. I wish more teachers would do so.

As I said, if a teacher can't tell the parents and the principal exactly what was said between the two, then it's an issue.

However, when I read this before clicking the link several candidates popped into my head.

Its amazing that every school has at least one teacher that if he did something like this, no one would be surprised. Or if there's rumor of a sex scandal, almost all the parents would think the same person is involved.

it ends up being a part of it in order to get some kids bought into learning from you. If i just come in and be a robot spitting numbers at kids everyday half of the kids wouldnt give a shite about anything im doing by the second week. Pre 2010 or so, yes maybe that worked. Unfortunately, thats just not the world we live in anymore.

On top of that I've been able to help get kids out of shite situations in their homelife because I was the only adult in the building they felt comfortable talking to. Like I said, what youre saying is definitely the main part of the job and what should have the most focus. But maintaining some level of a personal relationship becomes apart of it alot of the time as well. Again, there has to be clear boundaries (i.e. nothing you wouldnt want a parent or coworker/boss knowing about) but theres nothing wrong with surface level relationships being built.

This isn't it, but how long until we see some legitimately innocent teacher taken out by a deep fake AI video like this? Or, not even a teacher, hell......anyone.

I think part of the purpose of these questions is to help weed out potential weirdos. Even if they dont directly state something stupid im sure people that lean toward doing these things slip up and say something at least somewhat concerning alot of the time.

Maybe I'm different than most people, but I don't mix business and personal relationships. I don't really talk about my personal life with my co-workers (other than a comment here or there), and we don't hangout after work hours. I feel like the same should go for students and teachers, there should be a boundary between personal lives and school lives. I would be weirded out if a teacher came to my daughter's piano concert, especially if it was a male teacher.

Plot twist it was a setup by Brook and the bf to extort money.

I think that the students had caught wind of his little incident in Arkansas. He was probably a joke to them. Eventually the extortion idea germinated.

It doesn't excuse this guy breaking the law, but it does mean Brook is more evil harlot than victim.

This is an awfully shortsighted stance on the teacher/student relationship.

to me, there’s such a massive difference between places with actual community and those without it.

Where I grew up, everyone/their parents and grandparents were related, went to school together, or worked together. Lots of teachers had taught their current students’ parents.

there was basically none of this where I went to high school. The school was 5x bigger and the student body was pretty transient. I wouldn’t recognize at least half of my hs teachers if I saw them on the street because they truly meant nothing to me and vice versa. That’s not the case with my k-8 teachers.

Brook isn't the adult. The dipshit teacher is.
