How did they come up with the $8 figure.

News report 2024: banks get $20 billion less in late fees

News report 2025: banks report $20 billion more in annual fees

Another dumb idea
It’s not dumb. It’s by design. They want to reward people for irresponsibility and insult people who act responsibly. They’re laughing in your face. It’s not even subtle.

It may very well be a dumb idea, but I think you're being a little too sensitive here. Late fees are still being charged.

They'll just hike your variable rate to cover it.

Yep, I saw Biden announce it on X, and there were loads of people in the comments asking him to wipe away all sorts of their personal debt. Election year pandering.

So how does this help those who actually pay their bills on time?

You're not the target demographic.

I am talking about the general approach by the politicians to be lenient on people who aren’t holding their end of the debt bargain, thus creating a punishment for responsible people who do. I don’t think those politicians are dumb; I think what they’re doing is intentional and calling them stupid excuses their actions.

Oh, a trashy democratic system of government where politicians pander to the lowest common denominator? Yeah, it sucks. I hate it. It's only going to get worse too as we expand the franchise.

They don't care about people who are responsible. They only care to enable the dysfunctional.

So can we classify late tax payments as “junk fees” and cap those too at 8$?

This sucks for those of us that pay off our balance within 30 days.

The losers (non-winners) that carry a balance deserve the extra punishment.

Unfortunately, there is no debtors prison.

Are they capping IRS late filing penalties? Oh, wait, that's for people who actually pay taxes.

I love when they frame political platforms like this. No, it will save Americans, max, ~$25 per month, assuming they pay their cc bill late every month. It will, however, cost CC companies, collectively, $10 billion a year

I’m not really for this but I have a CC that I signed up a few month ago and set up the notify me by text of when the payment is due. Last month they notified me the day after the due incurring $35 late fee. I went ahead and paid off and canceled. Pretty shitty but it’s a free market and I choose not to do business with assholes.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is an illegal organization (legislatively) that Trump promised to defund and remove.

For some reason he never touched them.
