Kevin Kwan, author of the book underlying hit film “Crazy Rich Asians,” faces up to three years in jail in his native Singapore. He is accused of avoiding the country’s compulsory military service.

The film had its Singapore premiere Tuesday night, ahead of a Wednesday theatrical release. But Kwan was not among the cast or crew attending the soiree.

Kwan has lived in the U.S. since about 1990.

He is 68, so Singapore requires 40 year olds to register for NS?

Apparently you have until age 40

quote:

According to the Enlistment Act, conscription is mandatory for all "persons subject to [the] act", defined as those who are not less than 16.5 years of age and not more than 40 years of age, with some exemptions and with no specific bias to gender (not limited to males).

I'm guessing once he passed 40 he was in violation of the law.

ETA -
quote:

There have also been cases whereby defaulters who return to Singapore to renew their passports and visas are detained and arrested. Defaulters above 40 will also have to face a maximum of three years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000.

Yeah agreed. I lifted the subject line from the title of a Variety article so the author probably missed a journalism class or two.
