in the mid-80s to mid-90s (aka, the worst time in the history of the US), people truly believed Satanic cults were running wild he wasn't negligent as much as reinforcing a mythology that society 100% believed at the time.
They had one in Houma around 1988. Grown adults were convinced some high school kids wearing black were slaughtering cattle and children behind a shopping mall. The DA got involved and hauled people in for questioning. Houma's gonna Houma....

When I saw this thread I knew you had to be the author. This seems to be an important subject for you, why is that? Did something happen to you, like did you get in trouble as a kid because of something Satanic?

I don't think that's what he said. In fact, he made a point to say that the focus of his investigation was the sex crimes, and that there is nothing illegal about Satanism.
no the sheriff said the prosecutor did a good job focusing on the facts about the terrible crimes (ie, not getting into the dramatics)
the FBI agent straight up said there was no evidence of a Satanic cult

People have no clue. This is why I would have a hard time convicting someone based solely on testimony. This applies to the Cosby trial. It's so easy to put a man in prison based on nothing at all.

Well, like you said below, even if you DID, you'd essentially be in a position of having to tear down the jury's own self perceived ability to remember things as well as they believe they can. I'm sure a great attorney can make some dents on a case by case basis, but this is really more of a societal issue and we're no where near ready to accept just how shitty we are as information gathering devices.
shite, there is a juror from the Cosby case who has been squawking to the media who can't even keep two separate days and events discussed during the trial straight by combining the two into one day and used that as his basis for believing that there was no case.
If a person can't even do that when there are multiple people telling him he is wrong and he can simply look at the written record to clear up the mistake... well... hearing that scares the hell out of me and is why I understand why so many people are willing to take a deal even though they know they are innocent.

SFP, there is no doubt that an overstated panic occurred (and the subsequent fallout you describe)
You really think that this never occurs?
The "hysteria" above creates a perfect cover for those who wish to "work" under the radar (think of the Clinton Foundations' goodwill/charity work obscuring it's clandestine activities). There are some folks who have beliefs that are very hard to express in terms of common religious terms. Satanism is the term applied, but it is incomplete. Think worship of the light bearer, knowledge, scientism, art and progress (in a weird bastardized way)

ARMY WILL CLOSE CHILD-CARE CENTER AP Published: November 16, 1987
The Army announced it is closing and demolishing a child-care center at its base at the Presidio after allegations that as many as 60 youngsters were sexually abused there.
quote:
A Federal grand jury in San Francisco spent 10 months investigating abuse allegations surrounding the Presidio center, and almost 100 children were examined for physical or psychological signs of sexual abuse. At least four children were discovered to have chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease.

I remember the Satanic Panic/child sex abuse craze of the mid 80s/early 90s surrounding daycares and the West Memphis Three.
My question: How many of these devil worshiping, child abusing events ACTUALLY HAPPENED? Of course we'll never know the true answer but any credible guesses?

there was a study that found no evidence of any but it's impossible to know everything about all allegations

Has anyone made a documentary which looks back at this moral panic period? Would be great if they could include footage from all the talk shows of this period who covered this topic (I assume they may be difficult because of broadcast rights).

The only vaguely physical evidence that tied the couple to any wrongdoing was the testimony of a young emergency room doctor named Michael Mouw, who had examined the girl and concluded there was damage to her vaginal area that could be the result of sexual abuse. As it turned out, the doctor was wrong. Mouw told me that not long after the Kellers were convicted, he attended a medical conference where he learned that what he had interpreted as signs of abuse were nothing more than a normal variant of female genitalia.
How in the frick did their defense lawyer not challenge the doctor on this interpretation or even call up another medical doctor to offer his own medical opinion?
quote:
Mouw’s medical opinion had fundamentally changed, offering the Kellers an avenue to challenge their conviction. During a hearing in the summer of 2013, he unequivocally stated that there was no doubt that the child’s genitalia was normal and that he’d gotten it wrong when he examined her in 1991. He said that he tried to reach out to the Austin Police Department after he realized his error but was rebuffed by the detective, who was “convinced they were guilty.”
Absolutely shameful.
It's beyond pathetic how cops and prosecutors will do their damnedest to keep their convictions once it's signed and sealed.

HOF shoo-in! Serious, no trolling!
From SFP's days as a student, juggling and compartmentalizing studies, activities of daily life, multi-thread debates. Through and including life transitions and personal growth and changes up to Today.
Truly worthy and deserving of a statue to be erected outside the student union, holding some technological apparatus (laptop, smart-phone, etc.) symbolizing the last two decades for future generations to marvelize and awe over.
One of the top 10 who have made, make and will continue making this website worth visiting recurrently.
Peace, love and harmonious coexistence, SFP. An OT'ers OT.
