No, because the US is the only country with any kind of power that will only "play by the rules" when it comes to war. IMO, there should be no rules in a real war.

Yes, but not really. This is like the Game of Thrones topic. We would rule nothing but ashes. So yes we could defeat them with a surprise nuclear attack on the rest of the world, but no we could not impose US rule unless the population of the rest of the world was reduced drastically.

It is. I never played until a couple of years ago. My friends and I had to stop playing because we'd get so mad at each other. I haven't played in months. Great game.

The nuclear winter alone that would ensue afterwards would eliminate the vast majority of the remaining human population due to starvation and freezing. In the apocalyptic war the fleets are gone in a few days. We would win by our boomers, bombers, and missiliers.
And we'd have blown our atmosphere to hell and probably lost more than a few ports, cities, and the bread baskets.

I just looked to see if there was an app for this game. There is one called Subterfuge that seems to be similar to it.
A brief description of it is:

That sounds like the reason I remember we stopped playing
I used to love playing Risk too. My family and friends when I was growing up were board game nerds, particularly the war game types that were so popular in the seventies and eighties before the age of personal computers.

My dad served in the Marines in the Korean War, and was no shrinking violet. Sometimes I would half-joke with him that maybe the U.S. ought to just invade China and conquer it. He would always reply, "You ain't going to conquer those people without nuclear weapons."

The US military doesn't have the mass to pull this off. They might be able to sweep the field of opposition....MIGHT, this was more certain in the 1995-2000 window, but we couldn't suppress the gained territory.

Yeah, that sounds like a version of "Diplomacy."
Besides the problem of getting people mad at each other, I do remember the game taking a really long time to finish sometimes, so you'd need to plan on setting aside some free time for it.

Conquering territory/countries is one thing. Imposing your will and rule on countries afterwards is quite another.

I've never played an in-person game of Diplomacy, only online. Probably a good thing as we'd have gotten into fist fights. I bet that adds another dimension. Easier to lie to someone online.

I think there are some people in this thread that if they looked into Hearts of Iron IV, they would lose a significant portion of their free time to it.
