Build a ladder to the moon and only those physically fit enough to climb up there can escape.

Jupiter is basically our protection because of it's gravitational pull. If anything gets by and manages to hit us then that's just fate.

The moon gets battered by asteroids alot more often than earth.

Depends on the movie

At this point I would welcome an asteroid.

No

Just send me with my pick of 20 women and we will repopulate

It's a balancing act on #'s... It'll take about 1M population and 30 years to get to a self sustaining colony on Mars. You just drop a bunch of folks off on the Moon and they'll be dead pretty quick. If an asteroid is coming anytime in the next decade or two humanity is toast. We won't have a self sustaining Martian colony until the 2050's or 2060's most likely.
The most logical places for humanity to have self sustaining colonies on in the solar system are Mars and Titan. The Moon has tremendous mineral resources, especially Helium-3 once humanity figures out nuclear fusion, that will be worth hundreds of trillions of dollars, but the Moon is a very inhospitable place that could not support a self sustaining colony.

No. We dont have a self-sustaining colony on Antarctica, so what makes anyone think there will ever be one on Mars?
Posted on 11/10/21 at 6:51 pm to wnot91
But could we place one in Uranus?

What if we moved the moon into the flight path of the asteroid to absorb the collision?

No. Not enough rockets. Not enough fuel. Not enough time.
A thousand flights a day with 100 people on each would take 192 years.
Not to mention, 200 lbs of resources would be worth more to new moon people than a random person.
Any Earth evacuation will be limited to those picked as essential, and those rich enough to be deemed essential… because their money still matters to the 7 billion people left behind on Earth. It’s scary.

We couldn’t move 7 people there right now and leave them long term with no supply missions, so no…
Not to mention if the asteroid throws off the earth’s orbit, the moon is also fricked.

So what happens to the moon after the asteroid impacts the earth?
What is everyone going to eat in the moon?
Hell, what is everyone going to BREATHE on the moon?

You have made an assumption that we can spot asteroids and have time to plan. Just this year, objects haven”almost” hit earth and we had no idea had no idea they were coming.
We could potentially move 20 people or so in 5-10 years and then have them starve or run out of oxygen on the moon.
