Yep lived in El Paso spent a ton of time all over New Mexico. If open spaces are your thing there is nowhere better. Assuming Albuquerque?

Sante Fe gets plus reviews from my ex and a daughter.

It's not my cup of coffee but I'm so into the pinon coffee.
I get it shipped now.

Navajo. "Walk in beauty."
Mexicans transporting drugs
Artists. My people. See above.
Ranchers.

I'm no good over 4,000 feet. Not into snow.

New Mexico is a lot different than Louisiana.

Lots of feather Indians and Mexicans. I like it, especially the northwestern corner.

You have left a lot open to interpretation about NM. I did my tour of duty in Hobbs mid 90s. I've heard the gangs are bad and a dirty town has become worse.
I love Northern NM and summer there. All the money in the state is oil and gas down in the worst part of the state.
Buy your vehicle and tag it there. You'll thank me later.

I've never been in a more desolate place than northern NM, and Albuquerque felt like it was trapped behind the times.

New Mexico is remote, to put it simply. It really does feel like you are being transported back in time. If you enjoy isolation then it is your place, if not don’t do it. The only area I would seriously consider living there would be near Santa Fe and even then you would probably get bored pretty quickly. Not trying to be negative, just being real. It can definitely be a beautiful place but it is the type of beauty that is makes you feel empty in a way, if you know what I mean.

Las Cruces:

Pros:
- 100k person city that feels like a 30k person city, easy to plug in and find a tribe
- sunny 330 days a year, not as hot as AZ, not as cold as ABQ
- laid back, good people. SW hospitality is as real as southern hospitality
- some real pretty Hispanic and country/ranch women
- easy logistics, 10 & 25 basically loop the city
- affordable housing
- solid NM grub, nothing fancy, lots of great mom & pop places

Cons:
- land of mañana, people and businesses operate on Mexican time, aka now means later, today means tomorrow, tomorrow means next month
- if you want any big city amenities (airport, Whole Foods, Top Golf, BMW dealership) you are driving to El Paso about an hour away
- telling people elsewhere that you live in Las Cruces will get you blank stares or snooty looks

Other:
- 4+ craft breweries, 3+ wineries, if you are into that
- lots of eggheads and military (NMSU, NASA, White Sands Missile Range, Holloman AFB, Border Patrol, other 3 letter government agencies); probably accounts for 20k employees living in the area
- under the radar outdoors, Organ Mountains have hiking and rock climbing; lots of trails for hiking, running, MTB in the county
- day trips to Gila Wilderness, White Sands, Cloudcroft, Ruidoso, Elephant Butte (lake)
- lots of history, if you like Native, Mexican, Old West

Overall, Las Cruces is a solid place to live, a smaller Tucson. Southern NM is beautiful and adventurous in its own way but is not in the same category as Santa Fe/Taos.

If you have any specific questions fire away.

I love where I live.
I know very little about where you’re considering moving. Good luck.
