I gave up on Costco about 6 months ago. The one in Baton Rouge just gets too damn congested. Sam’s scan and go FTW now.

New Orleans has done this for a few months

I stopped using self checkout here because the cashier lanes are faster.

There's not a age verification option on self checkout which is why they don't allow alcohol in those lines

Sam’s allows you to check out via their app. I wish Costco needs to adopt it

I have seen the BR Costco self-checkout sign stating "no alcohol at self-checkout" for several weeks now. I think you can technically still buy from there if an employee is present, especially if you have already started putting stuff through the scanner. It's very likely that they do it to keep an employee away from self-checkout and have them doing another job/working the cashier checkout counters.
You were always required to have someone ID you when buying from self-checkout, but I know the BR Costco loves to have at least one employee at self-checkout to speed up the checkout process (quicker than them doing it at regular checkout IMO) since the load of groceries coming out is usually less than regular checkout. It's a weird system all around. Not sure the rhyme or reason for when they pick and choose to have help at self-checkout, but it's not a dumb policy to make sure they don't get hit with any type of lawsuit.

who is there to check your ID at the self checkout register?
You've apparently never been to the N.O. Costco if you are asking this.
They have 2-3 employees manning that area of the checkout process. They have hand held scanners to scan items in the basket to quicken the process instead of the customer unloading everything, putting it aside on the tray and then reloading the cart when finished. This greatly speeds up the process, especially if heavy items are purchased.
I've never been asked to show an ID and simply tell them my birthdate. I'm 72 and it is obvious I'm more than old enough to buy alcohol.

Sams Scan and Go FTW!!
This. It amazes me that it seems very few shoppers at Sam's uses this. I guess they would rather stand in line for 30 minutes.

Where else have you been that allowed you to scan alcohol/ tobacco at self checkout? The answer should be absolutely nowhere.

Scan & Go is the way to go

It’s assisted self checkout at Costco. I always face the barcodes up in the shopping cart. Sometimes the cashier at self check out scans them all sometimes they make me scan them on the register. It’s kind of ridiculous. I asked why they took handheld scanners away from the self check out registers and was told that people kept inadvertently walking out with them and taking them home. I also asked when were they going to catch up with Sam’s technology and a manager lady claimed that Sam’s is losing their arse on that with theft.

Yes, but you won’t get the auto verification from RFID, have to stop and show receipt. But they just went live with the auto verification like last year.
I’m not sure why anyone would deal with either of these clubs if it weren’t for scan and go. It’s awesome.

I've never had that happen and go to Costco all the time and buy alcohol on every trip.
That said, Costco customer service in Covington sucks, except for the AV section.
