I’m about to quit my current corporate job. In the seven months I’ve been here I’ve been “promoted “ three times to different roles. The group I’m in has been reorganized four times. In my most recent “promotion” I was given a team to manage 2 months ago and my people complain to me they have had three or more bosses in their time at the company, Well wouldn’t you know it I was told last night that the group is reorganizing again, I will no longer have a team, and I’m being “promoted” again into another role that is back to being an individual contributor. FML
Sad thing is my staff have all told me I’m the best boss they’ve had.

Not how I would have phased it but taking early retirement is the answer. If you've been saving like you should, or even take what equity you have, liquidate, downsize... you'd be surprised on how much money YOU DON'T NEED!! It's the single best move I made in my life... Money tends to make you stupid, you can get your eyes off the simple things in life that truly give you peace of mind. I don't expect many to understand this, if someone would have told me this 20 years ago I'd have laughed in their face, but there's very little satisfaction in getting everything you want.
Of course now I live on a budget but I'm comfortable.. wake up and do what I enjoy most... I've found hobbies and projects that are much more rewarding than earning paychecks... just the idea that I'll never have to get on the road during traffic again is priceless itself.. ...plus enjoying kids with enough time to give them concentrated, focused, attention... teaching, challenging them with new skills, watching them flourish, and still plenty of time for myself. With a little planning, many would be surprised that they could walk away from corporate life and have freedom well before the believed it'd be possible

I’m only in my 40s but have been kind of sick of the corporate grind for a while.. I’m also someone who understands what you’re saying; i think most people these days see retirement as a fantasy, something not attainable until you’re in your 60s or 70s, or maybe never.. i’d Be willing to cut back pretty drastically on my current lifestyle if it meant being able to completely walk away at a youngish age, say 50 years old or so.. of course, with the uncertainty of healthcare, that’s always the big question mark, esp since a decent policy can cost over $1000 a month.
Can i ask, since we’re mostly anonymous here- at what age did you retire, and about how much were you worth (property, 401k, savings, etc)? Under half a million? Over a million? Somewhere in between?

I had kids later in life. I was age 36, 38, and 43 when my kids were born. I will die before I retire. It is what it is.

These days, that isn’t really that late.. i actually know guys who have had kids in their 50s, and i know one who’s planning to start having them soon, he will be in his early 60s... THOSE guys have no hope of retiring lol

I work with a guy that just had his first kid in his 60s.

If you have kids that late in life, that means you theoretically should/could have spent the first 20-30 years acquiring wealth, without the cost of kids. Not sure why you’d HAVE to keep working past 60, etc. Very likely you’d be set up with passive income at that point

Maybe.. but i think it’s a tremendous leap to assume that most people have made great life decisions, even later in life.. statistically, most people don’t even have a couple thousand dollars to access in case of an emergency.. maybe you do, and I do, but most people don’t.
