China might allow a Chinese company to patent the use of something experimental someone else made to be an anti-viral treatment as long as it affects corona differently than other drugs in class??
That’s sounds like typical communist China BS. They never respect anyone else patents, and either force companies to jump through hoops with crap like this to pay govt or Chinese company something to use/sell their own product in China or elsewhere treating a virus that originated in and spread from China to rest of world creating market or just outright allow Chinese company to steal it for exclusive use in China.
China the country and its communist govt can go f*** themselves.

I just took my temperature and it was 95.5. Am I dying?

Don’t waste your time, it’s why I stopped relaying information from doctors back in Louisiana working in these ICU units.

It's true. I posted an article about it here a few days ago. They've already started manufacturing it claiming it is an emergency and they can't wait for the patent. In don't understand all of the patent law, but I guess there is a way to obtain a special patent for a specific region, not that China is really going to care about legality. They've been stealing our ideas for years.

We can’t take these numbers and run with them with future projections because of all of the testing issues but we certainly can use them to see odds once you are deemed worthy of medical attention as well as mortality across ages.
Be aware we are still in the log growth phase so mortality tends to lag behind other metrics as cases don’t have a chance to resolve:

I do know it (remdesivir) is treatment for late stage vent patients.
A hospital in Nola also put out guidelines to providers on using hydroxychloroquine in certain scenarios.
Email from Children's (LCMC) is the source

FWIW, as an impossible whopper flipping amateur, using clinical attack rate estimates from other countries, this is my attempt to normalize the overall hospitalization rate of those infected (aka factor in those who become infected with symptoms too mild to not get tested):
These numbers assume 70% of infected neither sought medical attention or was picked up by general screening due to relation to a positive case. Note that the data is from before when states began to pull back on blanket testing.
Assuming that factor is a fair estimate, there is >90% chance the final numbers will be within these ranges.
Hospitalization:
20 - 44: 4.29 - 6.24
45 - 54: 6.36 - 8.49
55 - 64: 6.15 - 9.03
65 - 74: 8.58 - 13.05
75 - 84: 9.15 - 17.61
84+: 9.39 - 21.09
Overall Hospitalization Rate: 6.21 - 9.42
Overall hospitalization rate to Date for the 2019-2020 Flu session: 1.38%
Overall CFR: 0.54 - 1.02%
Overall flu CFR for 2019-2020 season: 0.096%

Need to be careful being that salty. Hypertension seems to be a comorbidity with the virus.

As pandemics go, I am pretty disappointed in this one.

The city of New York is now moving away from Universal Testing or even Testing if you think you’re ill. They are only testing those that are so ill they feel as if need they need to go to the Hospital.
Instructing everyone else to telehealth, or call their 211 or 311 number. Their testing, PPE and healthcare capacity must be at their limit.
Meanwhile, the State of NY is still recommending Universal Testing.
Crazy.

I am having a hard time keeping my fever down with tylenol. Want to try ibuprofen but I hear it makes the disease worse. I still have a moderately severe dry cough. I am eating ok and playing games with my kids so it isn't all bad. The boss is still convinced I made up the positive just to miss work. As if I am just rolling in doe and don't need my paycheck. All in all, I am doing ok though. A little worried about my wife and her pessimistic we are gonna die attitude. Wish I could keep her off Facebook.

Post on Surly by a doctor. The ventilator crisis is explained by the bolded text.
quote:
With regards to Covid 19, we've seen the full spectrum of illness in our hospital. We've got a lot of positives or people in isolation being tested. Many are stable enough to go home, some in good shape, some on home oxygen equipment. The truly ominous thing we're seeing in our ICU is that once people go onto ventilators, they aren't coming off, unless they die of course. These people are going to tie up ventilators for many weeks or worse. Our regional leadership has asked us to essentially triple our ICU capacity. Transitional care unit and post surgical recovery areas are being prepared to deliver ICU level care. ICU doctors are already spread very thin. So the plan is hospital based internal medicine docs such as myself will take over many ICU patients. Clinic internists and medical specialty consultants (probably mostly cardiology, GI, etc) will help out the hospitalists. I assume there will be similar plans on the nursing side with regular floor nurses asked to take care of much sicker patients than they are accustomed to seeing. There are probably a lot of surgeons, etc who are twiddling their thumbs with all elective surgeries cancelled and almost all clinic visits converted to phone/skype appointments.
2 more days until I get a day off though and will spend it block sanding and barring rain, putting some primer on the Chevelle. Looking forward to it.
Some of the things I hear about alcoholic beverage makers switching to produce alcohol for hand sanitizer and other companies gearing up to make masks, ventilators and other medical equipment is encouraging. 'Merica!

Having a fever isn’t all that bad.
Focus more on keeping your lungs clear.
Drink lots and lots of fluids with an OTC expectorant.
Bonus points on having a humidifier while sleeping.

That’s my only really made up number in the post. Base numbers are all at an CI of 95%, but how to quantify the degradation from the overall sick normalization approximation.
Don’t really have good enough data to make the extra math worth it, especially in a non scientific setting where most won’t read it anyway, their opinions are already made.
Facts be damned.
