To me the simple fact that there was an icu bed for her to have (even though she may not have REALLY needed it) is a good thing — not over run yet.

That’s why I’m curious to know what is icu occupancy and how many vents are being used??? These are important figures.

Update from California:

Things are deteriorating some. We are completely out of face shields, N95s, and swabs. That means we can't test for now. We are running very low on surgical masks as well. No more isolation rooms available so we are cohorting pts. Put up 2 more tents today as well. We have stopped all visitors and the only exceptions are end of life or minor child pt. Quite a few more sick in the last 24 hours but no way to test for now so our numbers appear lower than they are. Had 3 different MDs refuse to see pts in our ED because of lack of PPE (hospitalists not ED MDs) so that slows the flow from ED due to admitting orders. and such. A 34 y/o nurse is positive and intubated. Its anecdotal but we have more young people than I expected? Maybe because we only looked at death rates and failed to look at who was getting critical care.

Lastly, we have had to think out of the box for solutions to supply issues. So here are the ideas we have implemented. To make face shields we used laminate run through the laminator to stiffen, weatherstripping, double sided tape and coban. For all emergent procedures (STEMI strokes etc) Put the pt in a simple mask instead of nasal cannula since there is not time to screen. No nebulizer treatments in the ED. It aerosolizes the virus. Use other treatments until you can get them in their own room. If you have a bay that can be in any way closed off cohort and never take off your ppe. Use garbage bags in place of gowns if possible. We found respirators at an auto paint supply place as well.

That entire post is hoax. Several people on my FB who work at hospitals and ambulance services in California have commented about that sayings it's simply untrue. Those last few sentences were bad and I should feel bad,especially saying it's a hoax. My apologies, I'll leave up for everyone to read.

ETA: There's been lots of posts like that spreading around, especially about Cali and Washington. Hospitals are not running out of PPE either.

ETA 2: Didn't mean to come across harsh. I obviously haven't visited all the hospitals in California I'm just reading quite a few post on FB from people on the front lines saying there's rumors of their hospitals and ambulance services running low and they are saying it's not true. Hopefully if some of these places are actually running low they get supplies very soon.

Basically this was before the field hospital surge in Daegu. They had 600 identified positive cases self quarantined at home that were monitored via twice daily calls.

Is it possible that getting the flu could give you some level of immunity to or make your body better prepared to fight off covid-19, or vice versa?

I did a quick google search and couldn’t find an answer to this, so I assume the answer is “no,” but I thought it was worth confirming.

I edited, so maybe correct. But there's a shite ton of posts like that I'm seeing on social media. I'm a medic and follow many medical and ambulance pages and people are saying none of it's true.

If that's her case then I apologize and she may very well be correct.

But one of the prevailing theories as to why kids are less susceptible is because they are constantly exposed to the other corona viruses that cause common colds.

Do you work at a hospital? Do you mind sharing a few of the hospitals having shortages? I promise I'm not arguing with you, just wondering if you're being told that or if you are on the front lines and seeing it.
