Why does this claim keep being made??? The healthcare systems in countries hit a hell of a lot harder than here haven’t collapsed. So why would ours, especially as our mortality rates fall into line with South Korea?

Co-worker that my wife works with is presumptive positive. She's late 50s and quite a few health issues and it didn't seem to hit her too hard. Couple of days in ICU and she's released for isolation.

It would not...
A collapse would mean patients aren’t getting treated, people are dying in the hallway, theres no medicine, etc... A bunch of angry people wanting to get tested isn’t going to do shite.
What you are talking about would end quickly with local cops guarding the entrances and arresting the unruly people.
ETA: And using your example of people flipping out over a chicken sandwich... Did you see a Popeyes close because of it? Nope... If fricking Popeyes can stay open and continue slinging chicken, you don’t think a hospital can?

Because healthcare systems aren't massively redundant. If the exponential rise of virus cases continues, eventually we run into shortages of stuff and providers. Is that so hard to comprehend?

It takes more than you think. With swine, we had an extra 300k hospitalizations over a 9 month period. Some of those included spikes around clusters and outbreaks. We survived.

That’s what would happen is 20 k infected people descended on a local medical system. Surely you agree.
The Popeye comment was just a flippant statement. But I do believe poeple wouldn’t handle being turned away well. There would be accusations of discrimination based on whatever and there could be social unrest.
