My company has dealings with Chinese factories, and as of Friday they were back up at 75% capacity (the ones we are dealing with, not speaking for all). Your post reads like you're making a fairly broad assumption.

So how exactly do you propose to determine who gets one of the available beds if the number of infections keeps rising unabated?
who said anything about unabated? People need to stay home when sick. Wash often. You know... what we normally do for virus breakouts.

Does a morbidly obese 30yo with uncontrolled diabetes “deserve” it more than a 40yo with immune deficiency whose only risk factor was in no way influenced by behavior? And how do you propose to ensure the availability of those beds in the first place? Honest questions.
You can’t ensure anything. People are pretending that they can by doing X Y and Z but that’s not true.

Alright Doctor? NP? PA? or Pharm. D?

Oh wait none of the above. I’ll let you continue to tell folks how to live their lives and how serious this is. Time to hit the gym, then I have to go to sleep for work tomorrow

the virus will spread, even with social distancing

But with social distancing and quarantines, the spread can be managed and some percentage of people might not be exposed to it that otherwise could have been because of those measures

This is from TJ Quinn, a reporter on ESPN

quote:

So, four days after I brought someone to a hospital that is now the Covid-19 hub for North Jersey, I've got symptoms. Sharing this because you're probably going to deal with this at some point and I figured I'd pass on what I'm learning. /1

quote:

I've had a fever around 99.5, a dry cough, and aches. But because my symptoms are minor, my doc said not to bother getting tested. Bergen Co. has limited tests, so younger folks like me (51) in otherwise excellent health should leave them for people who are really sick. /2

quote:

It's entirely possible I have something besides Covid-19. It's not like other respiratory illnesses suddenly went away. The person I brought to the ER had a non-virus issue and is fine. /3

quote:

On the other hand, if I do have it, it means I'm one of who-knows-how-many people who are not part of official statistics. Because there aren't enough tests. In one of the wealthiest counties in the U.S. (not my house, but, still). /6

I can only assume there’s 100’s if not 1000’s in the US with the same experience as him

Of course people need to stay home when they’re sick, but come on ... you know that’s not “what we normally do”. The same people who can’t afford to miss work during a shutdown can’t miss when they’re sick either. Others are just stubborn or oblivious and will continue to work or send their kids to school while they’re all wildly contagious. People in general are also TERRIBLE at hand washing when and how they should. .

I concede that we can’t guarantee available beds, so fine — let’s change the wording to ask how we can ensure the best possible odds that we’ll have available beds. I’d still like to hear your answer to the question.

That’s a great story, he’s doing well.

Everyone that thinks we are preaching doom needs to understand that the country isn’t taking these measures because they think YOU statistically have a high probability of danger. You don’t. Everyone, INDIVIDUALLY, has a great chance to make it or barely even realize it.

It’s about this being a NOVEL VIRUS. There is no immunity. Everyone is a host.

That situation is dangerous on a population, not personal level. It can make a small percentage (say 3-5% needing critical care) cause a big problem because of such rapid spread. Add to that a 5-14 day incubation period and possible asymptomatic spread and you can be sitting on a ticking time bomb. It’s why so many people in charge are walking on eggshells. They don’t want to be talked about by the world as the next Lombardy.

That’s why this isn’t the flu. The flu doesn’t spread exponentially every year. All those cases that are constantly quoted are spread out and a significant number of people can’t be infected.

Ok tell us what happens in the scenario where the hospitals are overflowing and people are dying before they can even be seen, most of the healthcare workers are out all at the same time, etc.
Gotta jump to worst-case scenario, eh?

Here's the thing.. there is NO way to know the effect our drastic measures might make on the number of deaths. No way at all. All we will know at the end is how much it cost, and how many jobs we have killed. And that will cost lives, too.

Not sure if this has been posted already since this thread is going by fast, but here's an alleged video from a Milan hospital.

Link. Might be disturbing to some people

I’m immune compromised you selfish a-hole. If these measures means my life is saved and others like me, then it’s worth it.
Then self-quarantine until the threat is over. Why is it everyone else's responsibility to take on the massive cost of protecting you?

And you have the nerve to call someone else a selfish prick? Jesus. How many people should have to give up their paychecks just so you can be a little more lax about your own health?

Why the spin? It makes their mortality rate more accurate.
