You do realize those are the numbers if 30% of the country gets the infection with a 0.5% fatality rate

Italy's ANSA news agency is now also reporting that, according to a draft decree, Lombardy and 11 provinces will be put on lockdown. It is expected to be approved in "the next few hours," but the draft is still subject to change

The assessment is from the government, subdivision of the HHS, I assume as a realistic worst case to try to get hospitals to prep

It's good to prepare for a horrible scenario and get a less horrible scenario.

Still hoping for an underwhelming pandemic.

100% truth

I'd be willing to bet that most of the people complaining about this being an overreaction are also the kind of folks that piss and moan about how worthless a government is when disasters are made much worse b/c of lack of preparation.

So around 3m people a year get the flu, yet you think 100m will get this? Come on...

The number that are popping now are still the ones that went prior to any major preventative measure happening. As more and more people realize that it’s here, more protective measures will be taken.

Hell if were to believe Chinas numbers, which we shouldn’t, only 100k have gotten it there and they are over 3 times the size of us... and much much much more densely populated.

I don’t know the number but no way it’s 100m Americans get this.

You don’t want that. She’s on a cruise with her mother for a reason.

It’s a novel virus, no one has immunity. Why would it not infect more than that? Unless it mutates ir we develop a vaccine.

I’m amazed that you can’t grasp this simple concept.

Read above...

So 1/3 of the county is going to get it which would be 30 times that if the annual flu...

Whereas a country over 3 times the size of the US and more densely populated only has 100k cases in nearly 4 months of it being there...

Can these comparisons just stop?

They are different situations, even if you want to assume clinically it’s the same as flu, only because coronavirus has no vaccine to try to shield at risk individuals and no herd immunity.

But FWIW, estimates of flu infections are between 33 to 50 million. That’s from October 1st to now, and the number is still counting

And that’s with a pretty big flu vaccine campaign and residual immunity from previous exposures.

Doubling or even tripling that value in the absence of aggressive containment is definitely reasonable. It’s part of why things are closing left and right.

They locked down millions of people to slow it down. You also laughed at that idea.

There's a huge missing piece of the data puzzle that I'd like to see. Age breakdown then by severity of symptoms. 70 might be more meaningful with that info, scaled to severity.

you think it’s ridiculous that a city would need to be quarantined to slow the spread

It’s becoming obvious that your only line of reasoning is “this hasn’t happened before, so it won’t happen”.

Again, please show me where I’ve said that? Or is this you being a bitch once again and moving goal posts to try to be right?
