Can you and slackster find somewhere else to take your hot takes? We have an actual person on this board in China in a closed off zone looking for news on this thread.

Point is we don't know enough about this thing at this point. China certainly isn't helping matters by suppressing a lot of information. Like others have said you don't quarantine millions because of a blip on the radar. At the same time you got all this fear and shite spreading all over Reddit and Twitter like the 90k dead rumor.

They’re actually discussing things not trolling and joking. I don’t think you know what shitposting is.

But approximately 45 million were infected with the flu. So far this seems to be about 10 times more deadly than the flu. If it is as contagious and without vaccination, it could be a pretty serious pandemic if it spreads to as many people as the flu did and actually is 10 times or more more fatal. It also could be contained like SARS was and be a small blip on the radar.
A) this virus didn't exist in humans 60 days ago. The only reason it was discovered was from hospitalizations and deaths. If that's the only way you measure the seasonal flu, the flu is far more deadly, even in its best year since 2010.
B) China's handling of SARS was atrocious, yet it was still contained and eradicated. Now China is taking unprecedented steps to stop this and people on here want to act like this will be worse than SARS.
C) Ultimately none of us know exactly how this will play out, but common sense and logic suggest it will be far closer to SARS or MERS than some worldwide cleansing.

Now confirmed in Australia, individual from Wuhan. Seems like a high number of infected individuals traveling, should be pretty easy to do some modeling on this to figure out rates as more data points come in.

He's looking for real news and you're giving him the 90k cases number. Okay guy.
Honkus, if you're looking for real news, stick to the CDC and WHO. , good luck brother.
You are such a pretentious ahole.
He is looking for news from twitter/anything breaking. The CDC and WHO are going to be behind the news curve. He can’t access most US news sites.
If you read my post - I said it was unverified. I only passed along what by all appearances was legitimate and qualified the information.
If the number of cases has spread to 21 of the 23 Chinese provinces as someone else was claiming and the Chinese are taking such dramatic steps, it seems more likely that the number of cases is above 10k vs the reported 1,300.
Now that we have cases across the globe, we will know within the next 10 days how bad it will get with a 2 week to symptom window - that is part of the problem with this virus vs say Ebola (Ebola symptoms obviously much worse). You will have people spreading the germs long after the initial exposure.
A Chinese doctor who get sick and was wearing a mask the whole time claimed he caught it because he didn’t wear eye protection... that is a pretty nasty transmission mechanism if that is true.

I'm kinda curious how we know this for a fact.
people could have been getting a pna and us diagnosing it as viral for months before someone was like "hmmm we are getting a spike of these"
people have been getting viral pna forever, its nothing new

It amazes me how many people travel through Wuhan... A city most of us have never heard of.

this isnt really special.
you can catch the common cold because you touched something and then touched your eye, its another point of inoculation.
coronaviruses can cause the common cold so this isnt surprising it would also have this method of infection

God forbid I post something from Twitter from someone claiming to be in the hospital. Do you have any evidence that she was making it up?

I took it to mean someone sneezed in the room and he didn’t have on eye protection... but I am not a medical professional.
Here is the claim...

Leading experts confirmed it is 'absolutely possible', saying the virus can enter the eyes by touching them – if it is on a patient's hands.
And they even warned the virus – thought to be spread through sneezes and coughs – can roam through the body to reach the eye.
