It simply illustrates that current infection and death rates in this country don’t mean much if the disease is spreading exponentially. That’s all.

We have already had several schools in Texas close because of the flu. Nobody freaked out.

People in Texas freaked out over a non-existent gas shortage after Harvey, they will definitely freak if any type of foothold occurs.

If you buy a small supply of food in advance and nothing happens, you don't lose anything. Probably should have had one anyways.

Buying that type of supply does not equal hysterics. Buying 10 years of food, oxygen masks and building a bunker is hysterics. Well, until something actually crazy happens I suppose.

I'm pretty confident we won't see anything like China and some other places here since our healthcare system is much better.

That is fear mongering The virus has slowed down in China, it will slow down quicker in South Korea. SK just got hit. Bed shortage is because they are trying to admit everyone who has a cough.

Everything that you don’t like is fear mongering

South Korea bed shortage

They are having a shortage because they are putting every case wether mild or critical in a negative pressure room. That’s a great containment strategy, but it’s reaching its limit. Now they are approaching 1,000 cases a day. Something will have to give and we will see how they respond.

That’s not fear mongering, just facts.

I may be doing my math wrong, but I think the South Korean mortality rate is 0.5% so far.

That number will decrease as more healthier people get the virus.

Forbes has global mortality rate at 3.4%.

It says there are 1,766 cases in South Korea and 13 deaths. Which by my math is 0.7% mortality.

Italy is at 655 cases and 17 deaths. 2.6% mortality rate by my math.

I think the opposite of your statement might happen, the mortality rate may increase as the virus has time to run its course. But that is speculation, of course.

The reason the death rate is high is because the vast majority of countries are testing only the sickest.

South Korea is performing the most numerous tests at this time.

South Korea peaked at just under 0.1%.

As more individuals are tested and less sick individuals test positive, the mortality had fallen to 0.74% as of a few days ago.

South Korea has surpassed 2300 cases and the mortality has fallen again to 0.68%.

It will continue going down.

Amazing how many times this has to be said in this thread.

It is amazing how people don’t realize this.

The reason we have such accurate numbers on the flu is because we test MILLIONS every year, resulting in an extremely high number of positive flu cases who don’t die, which results in the accurate and fairly low mortality of below 0.1%.

The only country that is testing wide swaths of people is South Korea and their numbers show a decreasing mortality, largely because they aren’t just catching the sickest individuals.

This is not overly complicated.

I do appreciate your posts because it makes me confident of two things.

1) my trip to Japan in November will likely be fine. ie they won't still be closing stuff and making the trip futile

2) a lot of people would hopefully have canceled their trips so I'll have the place to myself.

Ok, investors are really really starting to annoy me with this shite

Factories are reopening in China. Which means supply chain issues should start to subside

Wall Street needs to stop listening to cnn.

What on earth could possibly justify a 1000 point drop this morning? There has it been any new big story since last night.

That's my thoughts with Italy. I'm not going to a currently quarantined zone, my wife and I are both young and healthy, and we'll take precautions to keep up with hygiene. Hopefully this scares a lot of people into staying home and we have lots of room to ourselves. I'm more worried about getting caught up in a panic quarantine than actually catching the virus.

I'll take one more day since my end of month contributions probably buy today.

But afterwards I'd like to see it stop.

That’s the good thing. The irrational fears of some are going to lead to some outstanding travel deals.

I’ll likely hit up Vegas 2-3 times this spring for practically nothing. All of the conferences cancelling are going to lead to some nice comps

Ya, we have a woman I work with going to Japan next week. It would be like her 3rd trip there.

Her issues are getting caught up in some administrative quarantine, etc or not able to get back because of whatever. She'll just bring her laptop so she can work if that happens.

Our employer just instituted a two week self quarantine requirement if you go to any coronavirus country, so she'll have to do that now. Fair enough. We're not a private employer.

A few weeks ago, some guy at the barbershop said he canceled his trip to Tanzania

I don't know when he was going but that was ridiculous. Safaris are awesome.
