Sounds like this case is advanced and gonna seed a lot of other ones. The CDC dropped the ball on this one.

Jesus Christ I was trying to give the CDC the benefit of the doubt but this is absurd. This patient was just sitting at some other hospital without a test.

It’s also significant that this pt is already on a ventilator. From the trump presser it sounded like maybe only one other US pt isn’t doing well.

It is I believe. According to local news they said the patient is from Solano county but receiving treatment in Sacramento,

Why the frick is Iran able to run tests but we are having to get the green light from the CDC? We should be doing more tests than anyone. This really pisses me off

Trump takes a ton of unnecessary flak, but he's going to catch some deserved heat if the are multiple cases like this (a sick patient the CDC refused to test).

You can't get up there and constantly tell the public this is under control and then have cases like this pop up. If it's isolated, that's one thing, but a couple more and he deserves the heat.

South Korea has already developed a bedside test that can be performed at home and is fast tracking it for distribution.

I’ve rarely been envious of another country but it really seems like we are dropping the ball here. This is a time when we need our companies like Amazon.

It may sounds crazy but we could be delivering home test kits next day amazon delivery and have people test themselves at home and quarantine without the need to go out and infect others. We need to think outside of the box and use everything we have to beat this thing

Why is it that most of the world is taking this seriously and our CDC is sitting on its dick? This is absurd

Short version: Massively. Literally almost everything said that as it pertains to this virus (at least in the first 10 minutes because I had had enough) was wrong.

It was all of the assertions made as declarative statements that got me fed up. Specifically it was statement that SARS cannot have a vaccine that killed it for me. The reality is they did, but simply stopped trials because it ceased to be relevant.

That’s not to suggest there wasn’t a lot wrong in the preamble as well.

Yeah. It was wishful thinking that it was not. Way too close for comfort...

How much you want to bet the media blames Trump for this after painting a story last week of how the CDC was the knowledgeable experts standing in front of the idiocy of bad calls made by the Trump cabinet.

Thanks V

You would have missed the part where it will go around the world 3 times over the next 5 years. Men with preexisting condition will be hit the hardest in this first wave.

Politics.

Trump has tied his success to the stock market in many ways. Anything that's perceived as less than calming will have short term impacts.

Is this a big deal in 5 years? Almost assuredly not. However, when you're a week removed from hitting the all time high, it doesn't take much slowing of global growth for things to take a step back.

ETA - Trump will take heat for saying everything is fine if it turns out everything is fine only because of incompetence.

I heard him allude to it early. I assumed he was copy and pasting the epidemiology of the 1918 flu....even though the socioeconomic realities are entirely different, as well as this virus not really having the seasonality of regular flu.

Then he said that it will flatten out because those who are most vulnerable will be dead. Except the virus isn’t spreading on the walkers and wheelchairs of geriatrics. And a virus doesn’t have to kill in order to spread. The most prolific spreaders typically have no symptoms.

How many of you are epidemiologists or work for the CDC? That's the difference. Most people here are a bunch of armchair Epidemiologists.
