He was probably placed on ECMO. Which essentially means he’s dead but not technically until you unplug the machine. I guess there is a small possibility of recovery but I’m sure this was leaked to the media and they ran with it.

SARS uses ACE as well, but there is evidence that doesn’t explain everything...
LINK
quote:
Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has recently been identified as the functional cellular receptor for SARS-CoV. Studies of the tissue and cellular distribution of SARS-CoV, and ACE2 protein expression, reveal new insights into the pathogenesis of this deadly disease. ACE2 is expressed at high level in the primary target cells of SARS-CoV, namely pneumocytes and surface enterocytes of the small intestine. Despite the fact that SARS-CoV can infect the lung and intestine, the tissue responses in these two organs are different. All other tissues and cell types expressing ACE2 may be potential targets of SARS-CoV infection. Remarkably, endothelial cells, which express ACE2 to a high level, have not been shown to be infected by SARS-CoV. There is also evidence that cell types without detectable ACE2 expression may also be infected by the virus. Furthermore, studies in a new human cell culture model have indicated that the presence of ACE2 alone is not sufficient for maintaining viral infection. Therefore, other virus receptors or co-receptors may be required in different tissues.

This study is interesting. It says that ACE2 is the receptor for SARS but if you remove ACE2 it actually worsened the lung disease. Treating with ACE2 helped the disease.
So higher levels of ACE2 in Asians may actually be beneficial

Intriguingly, despite its normal lung structures and functions, ace2 knockout mice exhibited very severe pathology of ARDS/acute lung injury compared with wild type control mice (Imai et al., 2005); enhanced vascular permeability, increased lung edema, neutrophil accumulation, and worsened lung function.
Importantly, ACE2 was also identified as a key SARS receptor and plays a protective role in SARS-mediated ARDS.

Thanks for the info. Next 6 weeks will be telling.

Maybe Volvagia can chime in on that last study. I had to read it about 5 times because I couldn’t believe I was reading that without ACE2 the lung disease was actually much more severe.
Keep in mind this was an animal study and it was SARS (although they are supposed to have the same method of entry)

Fell violently sick on Saturday. Went to minor med center on Sunday All the conditions of the flu. Nurse did not test for the flu. Said something along the lines of CDC advocates not giving tamiflu this late in the season... Doesn't it seem stupid to not test for the flu? The reason I bring this here is because something stupid like this a few times over is can what make
an epidemicc turn into a pandemic.

What pieces are we trying to tie together? I think ACE is a non issue. It may explain higher infectivity but I can’t see how it would result in higher mortality

Finally about 2% of those who will catch this will die and that increases with age.
That’s not good. Was hoping it was more in the 0.5% range that we’ve seen outside of China.

Are you saying ACE2 is related to a cytokine storm?

Case report from the first US case. Very healthy 35 year old. His condition started worsening around day 11 and respiratory function was declining. They used an experimental antiviral medication Remdesivir and he started to improve.
Initial chest X-rays were normal. Also he started having diarrhea and they recovered the virus in his stool. This could be another method of transfer. I found it interesting that they sent the sample to the CDC and the next day had a result. I didn’t know they could turn them over that quick.

I'm not going to link the article but I hate it when the media has a headline like:
But then in the first sentence they admit its because 14 of the people infected were just flown in from a cruise ship.
They word the title to make it sound like this thing is starting to take off here in the US.

Back in 2004, SARS escaped from a lab in China that was studying it. 8 people were infected before they contained it.
Interesting

Well, I'm SOL with that info if it gets here.

Today, I talked to friends who had returned from a one month trip to Australia. They said it was the height of tourist season and the place was "crawling with Chinese". They also said that the air quality was terrible, one of my friends had the worst cough I've ever heard her have; she said it had been much worse in Australia. One of them had an accident at the airport with major cuts and they were taken to the Doctor's office AT the airport terminal. Clean up, stitches, large bandage. Made their plane.
Has anyone heard a good, vivid description of the Corona cough?

A dry non-productive cough.
If they have a fever, that's also a relatively common symptom (of course, those are symptoms for a number of other illnesses too).

Hubei - 1,807 new cases & 93 deaths
Rest of China - 79 new cases and 5 deaths
Really does anyone really believe today's numbers for the rest of the mainland? We have more international cases today than the rest of the mainland (without the Wuhan #s)?

I’m just as skeptical as you but they do have extreme quarantines in place. Containment worked with SARS.
